I voted for 32gb and latest model.

We have two 16gb ones without 3/4g. I would sometimes like more space, but we're much happier with two of the most basic model than we would be with one 64gb with 3/4g. Sometimes it's nice not to have to share. ;-)

I have a 32 gb iPad 2 that I've been using for 2 years and it's been great. No problems, no space issues for what I'm doing. I do not have 3/4g either. But my world is very wireless friendly. We have wireless at home and most of our stomping grounds have it too (kids activities, coffee shops, church, regular restaurants, etc). My DH did upgrade from the iPad 1 to the iPad 4, and that was worth it because some of the new apps and functionality was not going to work on the iPad 1. I'm not feeling a pressing need to upgrade my iPad 2 yet though.

It is reported to be mid summer but may be early Fall.

It would depend on when the new one is coming out. If it is in a few months I would probably wait. If it isn't until next year or even in the last quarter of this year I'd go ahead and get it now.

I have a 16GB iPad 2. I underestimated how quickly I would fill it up, so I have to delete things to have enough memory if I want a large game or other app. I still have them in the Cloud to download later and it isn't a big deal, but I'd recommend that you get the most memory that you can afford.

I don't have a mini, but I have an iPhone and an iPad 2, so I didn't need the in between size. I use mine for net surfing. I don't regret not having 3/4G at all because wireless is everywhere I go and I have it on my phone.

I primarily surf the net, watch shows, email, and manage books and documents with mine. I have a keyboard if I need to type, so the iPad has almost replaced my computer. I'm a bit near-sighted, and the way I use the iPad I don't see myself ever getting the mini-sized one. I just got a bigger purse so I could carry my iPad around when I want it.

I have a 16gb 1st gen ipad and it is plenty good enough for me. It's 1000000% better than no ipad, while a newer one is slightly better. So I say get the cheapest one you can find and enjoy.

You do not need space on an ipad unless you want to carry loads of movies on it. I watch movies but do it streaming (netflix) so don't need space.

I use mine at home only so I don't need 3g. If you want it for out and about, and especially if you don't have a smartphone, get 3g/4g for sure.

After he filled up his first gen 16gb iPad, I got my adult son with autism a refurbished 32gb 2nd gen last spring and I took over his 16gb. While 3G would be nice to have next week when we are at my Dad's internet-free house in California, that is the only time we would use it, so I did not pay extra for it (we go to a coffee shop near Dad's house to use the wifi there). We have wifi in our house at home already.

By deleting apps etc. as my son loses interest, I have kept his 32gb iPad useable. The apps are still in iTunes if he needs me to reinstall them.

I looked at the newer iPads with retina display at an Apple store and could not see the big deal.

Dh bought me a second one a few months ago. Which was nice, but he got me a 16g with the 4g. It couldn't even be cloned to match the other one because it filled up. And I didn't give a hoot about the 4g. I returned it for a refurbed 64 without the 3/4g.

Thank you. Looks like needs/wants are all over the place.

This would primarily be used by my 13 year old son and he does play games/apps. If it were just for me, I wouldn't worry about memory nearly as much because I don't use that many.

I see that the ipad 3 now comes with 128gb!

It would be so much easier if you could add memory to it!

Yeah, I know.

I don't currently have 3g/4g and sometimes it would be nice to have.

I have a 32gb, but am thinking it might be nice to go ahead and get 64gb as it really isn't a huge price jump. However, the diff between a 32gb ipad mini with wifi and a 64gb with 4g is about $180 or so. To me that is a huge jump.

I am a bit tempted to wait and see what the iphone 5s will look like. I have heard they may offer a screen the size of the Galaxy 4. I believe that is 5.5 inches????? That might be fine as an in-between.

I looked at the Galaxy note and while it is a little big for a phone, I like it because it can serve a tablet and phone purpose. I just want it to be iOS based!!!!!!!!

I have the 64gb mini, but only because it was on sale and only $70 more than the 32gb. I didn't get the 3/4G, and I wish I had. I hate having to look for wifi. One day I'll upgrade and James Bond will probably take mine. He doesn't use the internet as much as I do, so he doesn't care. I LOVE my mini!

I had a 16 gb generation 1 iPad for a while, but the lack of memory was frustrating. Also, I could not use it with my projector, so that stunk. A few months ago I got a mini and it works completely with my projector. Such a great tool. I also went ahead and got the 64 gb. Much better.

The first one was a gift from my boss when he bought his wife a newer one, and the mini was reimbursed 50% by the school since I use it at work.

Personally, wifi is mostly everywhere, and most apps don't need it, so I wouldn't waste the money on 3G/4g. Get the most memory you can afford.

See, this is another thing that bothers me......an ipad 1 isn't THAT old, is it? I hate that they stop supporting older devices.

I had an iphone 3 and didn't realize it wasn't able to do most of what the newer models could do. Now I hear the 3g is being phased out for support. I have a 4 currently so I will be phased out next!

I have an ipad 2 currently. I worry that it will be unsupported before too long.

DD has an iPad 3 that she won as a spelling bee prize. Running on wi-fi has rarely been an issue because she mostly uses it places where she can pick up a signal (home, library, etc.) The storage has been an issue, however. She deleted a bunch of apps that I liked to free up room for her stuff. It is her device so it was her prerogative to do so. However, if we ever have the budget to buy one for the family, I'm getting one with a lot more storage.

"Stop supporting" really doesn't mean much, I use my 1st gen ipad all the time, it's not an issue at all. I guess there will be new apps I won't be able to use, but, I haven't run into that yet.

Apps don't take up much memory at all, just the content of itunes (songs, movies). On big trips when I really want to use all 16gb, I just don't sync every song I own. It still holds a couple movies and 8+ hours of music. So long as you have a bigger drive you connect to, I don't see think lack of lots of memory is a big deal. I certainly wouldn't pay $180 more for it.

No, it is only $180 or so more with more memory AND adding 3g.

I know my son was unable to use the iphone 3 for 90% of the apps/games he wanted to play and my friend with an ipad 1 said that several things are working correctly for her anymore, including FB.

Many of the newer games/apps do take up a lot of memory. I think the newer the game, the higher the quality of graphics and the more memory it takes.

I voted that I like to vote in polls :w00t:

The truth is that I have a 1st gen Ipad that was given to me. I love love love it. We have iphone 4s's here and I love the way that they all work together and use the same plugs. That "use the same plugs" business is a big deal for us - I can't be searching the house looking for the right plug for each device.

So I probably wouldn't replace my 1st gen with the newest iPad because I don't want to be swapping cords around all the time or searching for the little $$$$ adapter for the lightening socket. At least not for a few years until we change phones.

I have a 32gb mini with 4g that I love. I really debated about the cellular and I'm glad I went for it.

Beware that if you go through Verizon, they make it a little difficult to turn off the prepaid cellular. I accidentally deactivated my SIM card attempting it (and upon Googling, discovered I was far from the only one! ). I ended up adding it to my Verizon cellphone account under the "share everything" option they have so I pay $10 extra/month to share 1G of data with my cellphone (versus $20 for 1GB on the prepaid). Probably 80% of the time I use it on wi-fi, but it's really nice to have the option to turn it on anywhere.

I hear AT&T makes it easier but I don't have first hand experience. The Apple User Forums have a wealth of info, though, and I'd suggest reading through some threads there before you decide on a device. Good luck!

I think I wil be getting the 64gb wifi version. We talked a while last night and honestly, I would LIKE the 3/4g but 99% of the time I don't need it. My phone has internet if I need to read an email or look something up quickly. And since this will be used primarily by my son, I don't think it is necessary.

The 64gb refurbished is now on sale for $439. The 32gb is $359. I think it is worth it for $80 more to double the memory.

We also don't have a family cell plan. DH has one through work, paid for by them and I have Straight Talk's Unlimited for $45/mo ($37 or so on ebay!) Kids have Spot Mobile's pay as you go for about $5/mo talk/text only.

Thank you all for helping me think this through.
