Soror
I just started LoE Essentials w/ ds. The lists seem too easy for him so we are trying out the advanced lists at his request. Can you tell me how lessons go in your house (time and sequence)? Are you just doing the spelling? We are on Week2 now and I am having him skip the grammar and composition but do the other pages. This week we did the spelling list from the workbook one day and now we are doing the advanced list spread out over 2 days, as we are trying to keep our days relatively short. We watched the first video lesson for the advanced lists. This week I am trying to do the list modelled after how she does it, although that seems to be giving more info than I think I should but I'm not the expert here. I wonder am I supposed to do another test without sounding it out or is it good just to do it the once as she does, or perhaps I've missed something major. *fwiw my son is above level in reading and seems to be at least on level for spelling. Soror
http://www.logicofenglish.com/resources/videos/itemlist/category/127-spelling-list-videos She doesn't have all the lists as videos just 8 or 9, the rest are just lists, however I feel fairly confident doing them on my own after watching the video. Chrysalis Academy
We've done the first 24 lessons so far using the Advanced lists. I have the TM on pdf, and I go through it and do the phonograms and spelling rules with dd10, and then we do the spelling lesson with the advanced list, we skip the rest of the lesson as they are below her level. It has really improved her spelling, though, it has been great so far! We just do it once a week, go through the new phonograms, the spelling rules, and the spelling list using the spelling dictation method. That's it, spelling once a week, easy peasy! Pansen
I had no idea these existed, and we are using the LoE. Thank you!

Thanks for chiming in. LoE just does spelling entirely differently than most programs so it scares me that it isn't enough. Of course the purpose of the program is to learn the rules and not memorize words. I guess we will see how the weeks progress on which list we use. He was insulted that the others were so easy but perhaps they will get too hard, I don't know he tends to surprise me with spelling. I do like doing the easier list for practice and it doesn't take very long at this point so I think we will continue it for now, we will take it one week at a time. I hope that by starting it this summer we get in a good groove before we start to school this fall.

As you say, the goal is not to have them memorize words, but to have them learn and internalize the rules, so that they can apply them both to the list words and to other words in their own writing. I'm definitely seeing the transfer to her own writing, which I never did with the "memorized" lists.
Soror
Ds actually spells pretty good but I believe it is just due to memorization, he just remembers what the words look like from reading. I want him to know the rules though so he can apply those to figure out how to really increase his skills, he can only memorize so much. I also hope that it will help him w/ reading. He is on/above level on reading but I find that he tends to guess on bigger words as he finds that easier, so I hope with working more on the phonograms that he will slow down and work on decoding when he doesn't know a word. PollyOR
I hope you don't mind jumping into this thread and to ask a question. How do you all have your students practice the words? I am using LOE with my 11yo and she needs more practice than the workbook provides. I believe Denise Eide said in one of the training videos that you need to spell/write a word approximately 40 times. My daughter is one of those who is going to need the repetition. She is doing well on the lists in the book but there are always a few words that aren't as easy for her. My thought at the moment is to dictate those words to her daily. Any other ideas? Soror
I don't know the answer Polly as we've just started. It has seemed previously that ds hasn't needed much practice either but we will see how it goes with LoE.
dbmamaz
The text gives optional 'spelling journal' exercises, like writing a chart of all the ways the broad a/short o can be spelled, or words that make the various sounds of augh. I have been writing these, because my son has trouble with the act of writing so I wont push him too much, but we review it sometimes. I have tried putting the words in Spelling City, esp the harder ones, but i found the definitions were confusing him. So i tried making some flashcards with the word and the definition, but it was just taking too long! Certainly there are all those games, too, in the game book, some of which are for phonograms but some of which are for spelling words. my son is 9 and we are doing the full program with lower level words because thats exactly where he needs to be. He's 2 years ahead in math and 2 years behind in LA. The thought of putting him back in school . . . ugg
PollyOR
Thanks for the suggestions. I do need to dig back into the book and use some of the suggested resources. I guess MY problem is we are doing the full lessons and it honestly takes a lot of time. I need to slow down and do what is best for my daughter rather than worrying about the time involved (little pep talk to myself ;) )
dbmamaz
I find it takes a lot of time, too. She suggests that with older students (over 8?) you spend 2 hours a day and finish it in a month or something? Thats nuts! We spend probably 4 days on a chapter. And take fridays off of spelling, so thats a chapter a week? We're on chapter 13 and i think we started in January, but missed a lot of time for illnesses.
