Teaching US History, Govt., and Lit. at the same time

Recommended Posts

I plan to cover US history, government, and literature at the same time, but I'm wondering how to choose where to list the primary documents the student reads. (I list the courses separately on the transcript and course descriptions.) Fiction is obviously going under lit. Autobiographies could go under history or lit. The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and federalist and anti-federalist papers could go under history, government, or lit. How do you assign these writings?

You could list the courses separately on the transcript, but list them as one integrated course in the course descriptions. That's how I deal with my combined history/English courses, because it is impossible to clearly say which resource belongs to which. I list all resources and explain that one credit is given for each history and English.

I will most likely do a similar thing for US history and government, because I do not believe one can really separate the two.

I listed as separate courses.

I tend to stick largely with fiction for the Literature, and only put 1-2 biographies or essays under the Literature heading at most (because we tend to do a lot of novels and short stories).

I put most biographies and essays under History (because they typically do NOT use the vast majority of literary elements that fiction does, and themes are directly stated in a biography/essay, not implied as in fiction) .

I listed all the historical documents/primary source readings under Government or History.

Just how I chose to do it. :) Warmest regards, Lori D.
