Fanfiction websites

It depends on what she's a fan of. Some fandoms have their own sites, and how those are run depends entirely on the one or few people who run them. fanfiction.net is the basic place for all fanfiction though, and I've never heard of any issue with predators there. Just crazy people. I'm pretty sure your dd won't need to announce her age in any way on her profile page, so it may be best to just skip that info, just in case.

My Little Pony, I assume you won't have this problem.

You'd be surprised. :o

OP: I looked up FIM, and I'd stay away from it.

You'd think there'd be a big archive for MLP for kids, but I'm not finding anything.

I think you best bet is still fanfiction.net. Sit next to your dd and show her how to work the interface. Tell her not to mess with the default search settings. (Default is set to K-T, you have to choose for M rated, and technically MA is not allowed, but some people get confused and post MA as M anyways). Don't share too much personal info in the profile. Block anonymous reviews. Have any PM's or other messages sent directly to your own email box. That's how I'd deal with it.

I'm a bit embarrassed to even admit I know such a thing, but My Little Pony has a HUGE adult male following and the fan fiction can run towards the...inappropriate. Don't ask me why because I have no idea. But please be aware that just because its a children's show doesn't mean it's safe. I wrote a lot of fanfic as a child myself, And it led to a lifelong love of writing. O hope you cam find an age appropriate setting your your daughter to share hers.

Yep, if it exists, someone's written smut for it. I saw a couple of lines of a Thomas the Tank Engine fic (reposted on a blog for laughs) that was obviously NOT child friendly. It wasn't graphic, but I'm still gagging. Ugh, why on Earth...?

Count me as newly informed! I can't even imagine.

As she gets older, be more cautious, adult fan fiction often runs to intimate issue (50 shades of grey was begun as fan fiction). My Little Pony, I assume you won't have this problem.

MLP is actually one of THE worst fandoms a kid could be interested in, unfortunately. There are more graphic stories than you can imagine. No, I don't read them, lol, but it's well known to anyone who spends time in the fanfic world.

My first choice would be a monitored site; I'm not aware of one for MLP, but you might be able to find a general one. You would have to monitor her quite closely on fanfiction.net; they accept M rated stories, and there are plenty that exceed M to NC17, and just go unnoticed. I would also be a bit wary of the comments, mostly because of the fandom.

Is there a general monitored site? The only other general one's I can think of (AO3 and ficwad) are.... problematic.

I just did a quick check on fanfiction.net, and there are more than 2,000 MLP stories with an M rating (for Mature).

Oh, I'm sure. But after JKR sued them they did try to be a bit kid-friendly. Like I said, M only pops us if you specifically ask for it. And they do sometimes enforce the no-MA rule.

OP - another option is to open a largely private LiveJournal account. Lots of authors use those for their fics instead of messing with an archive. Maybe you can find a group dedicated to just kids stories to hook up with. Everything and its brother exists in fanfiction, something like that has to exist too.

I don't know of any; the only well monitored sites I've seen have been for specific fandoms.

But I think even T-rated My Little Pony can get a bit weird, lol, especially for a kid who ONLY sees them as, well, My Little Pony. That could be gotten around by helping her pick stories to read, but I'd still be a bit worried about comments and such, mostly b/c the fandom is so. very. weird.

Or, if it doesn't, LiveJournal communities are very easy to set up (and free).

My responses in red.

Thank you all for this--the livejournal sounds like a good idea; I also heard about something called dreamwidth.

Either of those would work; they are very similar. Dreamwidth is actually based off of Livejournal code. Livejournal has free accounts; Dreamwidth does not (but also does not have ads). Dreamwidth (and a couple of others I can't think of) are Livejournal 'clones,' which mostly means you can easily cross post the same entries.

I know that it used to be easier on Livejournal to post from your phone, and to post to Facebook, but that may have changed.

So sorry, I am old and senile and completely forgot about this until I saw it again this morning. :blushing: Anyway, glad you have gotten some answers. I did ask my dd this morning, and she uses some of the ones already mentioned. Her answer was " It depends on how responsible the child is. Twelve is not a good age for the internet." Lol. She is 18, by the way.

Lol. She's wise. Yes, I have "locked down" a lot of internet on her computer.
