BSA Boy Scout Board of Review questions

Tonight's Boy Scout meeting was an entire meeting devoted to Board of Reviews. My son has all the requirements for Second Class signed off in his book. He asked for a Board of Review tonight. He was told that he couldn't have a BOR because the Troop computer didn't have all the requirements entered into the computer. The last requirement was signed the first week of May. The leader that signed his book in May didn't enter the info into the computer. Please tell me where in BSA materials that the Troop computer overrides the signatures in his book.

I used to keep the records for my son's scout troop. Many times a scout would go for his board of review when my records showed he was not ready. I would send the forms incomplete and the scoutmaster would fill in the missing items at the BOR. It was never a problem. As long as I got all the dates I would advance the scout. I hope everything worked out for you and your scout.

I'm so sorry for your son! The person in charge of advancement in our troop is a bit disorganized (I wish there were a computer involved), but I can guarantee that the committee members go out of their way to ensure that any boy who has finished his requirements get his BoR right away. We've often stayed late to do just that.

Not to hijack (but to totally hijack), can someone please explain the BOR process to me? What happens?

It follows the Scoutmaster Conference. In the SM the scout is interviewed to determine that he has fulfilled all the requirements for advancement. That is the true proofing ground.

The BOR is a more formal end of level conversation. It's the scout's opportunity to express what he found helpful and to make suggestions about what might be done to help future scouts and to improve the troop. The scout should actually have the freedom to make suggestions about what he sees the adult leadership doing that is helpful/unhelpful. A correctly done BOR should leave the scout feeling accomplished and encouraged, and leave leadership with valuable input from the scout about troop management.

The BOR is held with several committee members. No boy in full uniform who presents us with an actual book with everything signed off ever gets turned away here. Our committee chair has refused to let anyone touch the computer records in 4 years (I was the Advancement Coordinator for 2 of those years), so she's always behind. The boy takes his book to her after the BoR anyway, so she can record then, if needed.
