My Gifted Child

Recommended Posts

The other day when we were out of town I saw a storefront that caught my eye. The name of the store was My Gifted Child. On the outer window they listed things they had in their store like children's books, educational toys, and workbooks. Maybe I'm off base here, but I think a store name like this feeds into the antagonism against the gifted label. It also tends to support the idea that you can educate or train your child into giftedness. I wish that people would understand that giftedness isn't high performance, but a brain that functions differently. Maybe the term gifted needs to be replaced with something else.

I've often wished they'd replace "gifted" as a diagnostic label with something that doesn't sound so desired. I use "Highly Asynchronous" a lot when I'm trying to explain my homeschooling-because that doesn't sound as "good" as "Profoundly Gifted"-and is a better fit, I think, for a kid who's skills span a good decade or more of developmental ages/stages.

I tend to be biased against buying anything with the word "gifted" on the cover-and I notice publishers like Prufrock Press, AOPS and Royal Fireworks Press seem to do a pretty good job of creating materials with an eye to using them with GT kids that aren't explicitly labeled as such.

I wonder what the owner actually meant by "gifted." Perhaps it's one of those "all children are gifted" types. Or maybe it's a language issue, if the owner is from another culture / country. I would probably take a peek in there and see, just out of curiosity.

Yes, "highly asynchronous" works for my kids - definitely. If it fit all gifted kids I think it would be a good term.

My great uncle (in his late seventies) rather snidely said and is he a genius when I was updating my great aunt on my son's activities. I just smiled and said, of course, and continued the conversation. I'm guessing a couple of his grandchildren are gifted and he thinks it is silly and not like in his day. He did have a rather deprived childhood.

Hmmmm.......

maybe 'My Weird Kid'? "My Oddly Wired Child'?

Still thinking..........

haha!

"the exhausting child."

Good one too!

Or. . . how about, "My Odd Child Whose Interests Change Like The Wind"

subtitle:" You'll find something in our store to keep your child's interest for 3 days or so."

Then again, maybe they originally chose "gifted" to take the place of less encouraging names such as "nerdy" and "out of touch." Kinda like "special" for some categories of kids.

High needs fits my kids even though it is usually used to describe kids at the other end of the IQ scale. I think "academically gifted" is fine - plenty of kids are described as gifted in sport, musically gifted etc so it seems academically gifted would work. Of course not all kids with high IQs look gifted but then not all gifted hockey players are good at tennis either. just gifted does sound a bit smug though unfortunately.
