Smiles
I was wondering if it would be to much to include some American history with MFW 1st. When I include it, it will mainly be reading books and maybe a coloring page possibly a little craft or something. Nothing major but will this still be to much to include with MFW 1st? I had also thought about studying some geography again nothing major. I do plan on using adventures but I would really like for my ds to know some of the major holidays and people! So what do you think too much or will it be ok. Alsoif any of you have done this how do you set up your week between history, science, geography. Again I want my main focus to be reading, writing, and math but I want to add these in mainly through reading! Thanks
Mom2TheTeam
It would depend on what you are doing with any other children and how much this child enjoys "school time", IMO. We are just finishing up 1st. It would have been too much for him in the early weeks because phonics was tough for him and it took a long time. But, once we got about halfway through and he was reading much better, he could have done that. If yours is better/faster at phonics or at least doesn't complain the whole time and get distracted making it take 3x's as long (Urrr....), maybe your child could do all the work and still have time to include extras from U.S. history. I also have 6 young children. So, I'm not sure I would have gotten anything extra in even I'd wanted to and he was up to it. ;) I will say, I really don't think you need it. We are going to be starting Adv on July 4th. Much of what you are mentioning is included in Adv. Could you just do some unit studies on the different holidays you would like your child to learn about as those holidays come up? You could include books about specific historical figures in those studies. Like, read about a couple of presidents when you learn about President's Day and about Columbus on Columbus Day. I think this would be very doable. You could even break from your normal MFW schedule for a week to do a study on the holiday that week for the "bigger" holidays. But, even if you didn't break from it, you would have a more full schedule for that week or two, but not for the entire year, KWIM? At any rate, MFW 1st is a wonderful, wonderful year! Enjoy!! Smiles
Thank you I have thought about taking a break on the holidays and focusing on the presidents or thanksgiving etc., maybe this would be a better idea. He has his days with work some days are great some not! He is reading but not great. But he loves being read to! I have a ds 4 and dd almost 2! If I was you with 6 kids I'm not sure I would get anything done, I think you are doing great! Thanks for your post!
Smiles
One other question, this is kind of off topic but I see that you do both 1st and K how did that go? My ds 4 wants to start K by fall he would be close to 5 and he is reading words like cat etc. so I'm thinking about letting him do MFW K I don't know yet I think the handwriting would be hard but a lot can change in that amount of time and I don't want to push. So I'm up in the air about it.
