cseitter
My 3 little ones will be first grade in the fall. We will be following the WTM suggestions to do Ancients. I like the looks of Discover the Scriptures for our HS scripture study. My question is would or have you done Old Testament during your year with Ancients or would you start with the Book of Mormon study? I also have a 17 year old and next year in Seminary they are studying the BofM so I was kind of leaning towards all of us working on it together but... you know.... Decisions Decisions! :)
Targhee
For is scripture study is independent of school. It falls in the domain of personal habit, rather than academic pursuit, and I want them to have that personal habit even when they are done with school (for the year, for holiday, end of college, etc). So I would do Whatever your seminary student is doing.
MusicMama
We have really liked that program for our kids. You may find it difficult to coordinate the younger kids with the seminary schedule or with the history schedule. I would just do what you want. We will be doing the New Testament this year, and use the curriculum before we start school during our morning family time. My dc are still too young to have independent scripture study, so I think this is a great fit for us.
ForeverFamily
My 1st grader is doing ancients this year. Having the ability to add scriptures to our history studies is actually one my favorite benefits of homeschooling. It has really helped history come alive for my Dd. I can see her making connections that I never had as a kid. For me personally adding scripture study has actually made ancient history a lot more fascinating to study. To answer your question, we are reading through all of the Old Testament, New Testament, and Book of Mormon this year using the Illustrated Scripture Stories sold by the Distribution Center. We are not diving deeply into any one particular book this year but we are getting a very nice overview that is mostly lined up with history. I also plan on doing this with the D&C when we hit that era of church history as well as adding extra study of each prophet as well as the pioneers. I haven't exactly decided yet what we will do for the in between years (like next year) when no one book lines up with our study of history. I think for those years we will pick one book to study for the whole year, and possibly do a scripture journal. All of this is in addition to nightly scripture study with the whole family. Tracy
I really enjoyed focussing on Bible during Ancients with my little ones. But having been a seminary teacher, if I also had a seminary student, I would try to keep all scripture study on the same schedule with seminary. I would have everyone memorizing the same scriptures. Seminary is heavy-duty stuff, both in the depth of the material, as well as in the sheer volume of work. I would want to make sure the whole family were supporting the seminary student. You can always go through the Old Testament scripture reader with your littles as part of your ancients study, though.
Miselainia
I'm generally all for doing as much as possible as a family, but my oldest doesn't appreciate the rest of us "hi-jacking" his scripture study. So we have "Gospel Study" with the younger ones during school hours, have family scripture study in the evening and encourage the older ones to do their own scripture study. Amira
We did OT with ancients and I liked that, but I wouldn't combine with an older child. The discussions are too different and someone would very bored. I do what's best for each child as much as possible.
