My dd's sense of humor and me

I just don't get my Dd 15's sense of humor. This plays out several times a week. She will tell me this long story. "Oh mom, I have to tell you this story. It was SO funny." and she proceeds to relate this long tale. I listen and wait and wait.....finally she's done and I am thinking. "oh, I missed the funny part somewhere!" I'll smile and kind of fake laugh.

She regularly wants to watch youtube videos with me that she's come across and it's the same thing. She's giggling hysterically, and I'm like...."Okay. So that's a bit funny but really not THAT funny."

sigh.

Sometimes she gets offended that I don't find things as hilarious as she does. It's not like I am being sullen on purpose. I do try to see it. I just....don't.

Sometimes I bring up certain comics that her dad and I snicker about and she doesn't get at all. So she sort of understands it.

But it's really hard to explain why one person finds something HILARIOUS and the other can't figure out the punchline!

My 14yo ds is the same way. No one in my family "gets" his sense of humor. I feel bad about it, but I am thrilled that he does have friends that seem to get him! His jokes relate to movies, books, TV shows and other "techie" things that I do not know much about...and he thinks he is hilarious! I do try to chuckle when he hits close to home, but I can't fake a gut-buster. He does laugh at the general stuff that the rest of us enjoy- so I hope one day we can find him as funny (as he does) ;-P.

I was your daughter! My family did not get my sense of humor at all and always accused me of being mean. A few years ago my mom told me that she was finally starting to get my sarcasm. I can't believe they didn't realize I was being sarcastic for 28 years! Hah.

I think it is great that you are trying to relate to your daughter. I'm sure you'll find SOME things you both find funny!

That's really interesting. I actually get my kids' sense of humor so far (doesn't fall far from the tree! We lean to a dry sense of humor.). However, I volunteered at a teen co-op a number of times this year and there were a few girls in the 14 to 16 age range that just giggled at EVERYTHING. Loudly. They were cute and made me giggle.
