BlueTaelon
So, I got a call from one of the local internet companies that they are finally putting in an access point and we should have line of sight. (remote area) So they came out and umm, wow. Im really underwhelmed. The hook up from the little receiver dish thing is a single point RJ45 for 1 computer. I have to buy a wireless router if I want more then that single hardline to a computer. I havent seen anything like this in about 20 years and the speed is only 3mb to boot for $50 month! Is this common out in the sticks? When we've had internet installed before it always came as a 5 port hub wireless router for half the cost and twice the speed min for at least the last 10 years. Im really annoyed that this set up is worthless to us until I have the extra cash to buy a router, 99% of our stuff needs wifi:-(
beaners
Our internet options are garbage, and we aren't even that far out. Our download speed at speedtest.net is 1.5 mbps, and our upload is .33. We do pay each month for our router. Our internet alone is $50, and we're required to have a home phone line to get it which we wouldn't otherwise purchase, so we have to pay $90 a month. We do at least have the wireless from the router.
elegantlion
Our Internet comes with the modem only, which you rent for 5.00 per month. I ended up buying my own modem, much higher quality for around 50.00. If you want wireless in the house, you provide the router. Since we have several wireless toys, we invested in a better router as well. I thought that was pretty standard, they supply the modem you supply the router. We're rural and pay 40.00/month for hi-speed, which was a special, next year it goes up to 50.00/month. Our last house was not rural and it was similar set-up. Since they don't supply the wireless, they don't have to service it or provide tech support either. I imagine the monthly costs would be higher if they had to do that. Um_2_4
I'm on the edge of a fairly large metro area, but even in the middle of the city here there is one company that does not provide a router, only the modem. We got an inexpensive router with wireless for <$20 online.
Dahliarw
We have internet via cable through xfinity. A modem is not included in the basic cost (well, they'll tell you it is, but you have to pay extra each month to rent it, you can save by buying your own). Same with the router. We own both of these ourselves.
