kfeusse
My boys each own roller blades, but the wheels are the hard plastic ones and they are not in very good condition and they want to replace them with the more rubbery ones (I am sure there is a correct term, but I don't know what it is)...thus my question...when looking on line for either new skates with those type of wheels...or just looking for the wheels themsleves, what terminology should I be looking for?? thanks. kroe1
There is no either or, but rather a continuum of hardness. This is measured in durometers. The higher the durometer, the harder the wheel. The harder the wheel, the longer it lasts, but the rougher the ride. Also of importance is the shape and size of the wheel. But, to me, the most important part of a skate is the bearings. I would never replace wheels without replacing the bearings. Getting a nice pair of skates for your boys should be based on the intended use. There are several sites which should explain better than I how to pick skates. Start with wikipedia and branch out from there.
kfeusse
they just want to skate...either in our basement when the weather is bad (cold or rainy) or outside on the sidewalk. They are only 9 and 11...so nothing competative...just for fun...but they know there are wheels that are not plastic and are more comfortable to skate with. Χάων
Go to a nearby roller skating rink or a play it again sports if you have one. Or a hockey supply store if you want to spend more. Buy from them. They do not need to cost a fortune, and you should be able to get skates in good shape used. I buy DS Mission inline hockey skates. Avoid going in early hockey season and you can get some good deals. I bought DS his current ice hockey skates in the mid hocey season clearance sale at play it again. I spent about $25 for a pair of skates that didn't look like the had ever been worn. I would never buy or suggest skates from Target, Walmart, Dicks etc. They are cheap quality and can hurt your childrens ankles and make it hard for them to properly skate. My ds speed skates but owns hockey skates (ice and inline) to play around in. I have 4 years of experience buying skates and have made my fair share of poor skate buys before ds was really able to give feedback on them. Quality makes a huge difference. kfeusse
thanks. We don't have a play it again sports near us...or any place local at all. SO I will be stuck buying on line. IF anybody can give me some advice for on line purchase, I would appreciate it. The boys are saving their money to buy these...so we can't get real expensive ones. kroe1
If your kiddos are just playing around mostly inside and some outside, then I would go with RollerBlade brand in about the $100 range. I started inline skating over 20 years ago. I have had to buy probably 15 to 20 pairs of inline skates over the years. My favorite pairs have always been the RollerBlade brand.
