Guest Cjachord
We are planning on homeschooling our upcoming 9 year old. I have recently stumbled onto well trained mind book. I am extremely happy I did for many reasons. My son is above average in school. Straight A's thus far in grades 1-3. However, I have become very concerned because he makes these good grades but can't figure out a math word problem at times. After reading the first part of the book, it has came clear to me as why. My question is, with him going into the 4th grade this fall and not really getting the sound grammar fundamentals. Should I start him over with 1st grade concepts and move him along at his pace. I truly believe he will move along very quickly. He does very well, but as a parent who has gotten a master's degree, Im afraid his foundation is lacking for future studies. Personally, I struggled through beginning college because of this very reason.
Aurelia
I'm not entirely sure if your asking specifically about grammar as a subject or about grammar-stage skills. Most third and fourth grade books (like R&S and FLL) will start at the beginning of grammar concepts. I would start with one of those. In fact, pretty much all of the R&S and CLE curricula start near the beginning in their third grade books. The best thing you could do is have him take placement tests for the curricula you plan to use, and get the books at his level, whether that's second or fifth grade.
