twoxcell
I have been trying to build up our collection of folk tales/myths. So far we have the D'aulaire Greek myths and Norse Myths, The Children's Book of Virtues, Tales From Arabian Nights, American Tale Tales, King Aurthur tales, and some others. I was thinking it would be nice to have a good book of Native American tales with pictures. Does anyone know of such a book or books? JNW
It sounds like you're looking for a storybook with several stories. I don't have one of those, but I have these books in my Native American collection: Navajo ABC, A Diné Alphabet Book, Tapahonso The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, Paul Goble First Biographies: Pocahontas, Gleiter Scholastic First Biographies:Squanto Scholastic First Biographies: Pocahontas and for littles ones: Baby Learns About Seasons, Blacksheep

Thanks for the ideas. :)
twoxcell
Yes there are 500+You might consider regional collections. 500 wow that is a lot. I was thinking perhaps there was some what of a compilation of a variety of stories. Obviously not comprehensive. I have never seen anything like that so I'm not sure if it exists. How about Native Americans of the North West coast since that is where we live?
Matryoshka
I'll second Joseph Bruchac - he has collections, and also individual tales. Here are some of his collections we liked; many tribes are represented in these: The Earth under Sky Bear's Feet Four Ancestors: Stories, Songs, and Poems from Native North America The Girl who Married the Moon : Tales from Native North America Other collections we've enjoyed that are more tribe specific: How Rabbit tricked Otter and other Cherokee Trickster Stories by Ross, Gayle., Jacob, Murv. Spider Spins a Story: Fourteen Legends from Native America by Max, Jill The boy who lived with the bears : and other Iroquois stories by Bruchac, Joseph, Jacob, Murv. Also, Paul Goble has a series of Blackfoot stories that are published as individual picture books.
Farrar
I also had hoped to find a good - or a couple of good - collections. There are just as many (or more?) African cultures, but there are decent collections that sample folklore from Africa. And just as many European cultures and there are many fairy tale and folk tale collections from Europe. But I never found one. Instead, we found many good individual books, such as the Paul Goble ones linked above - though many others as well. Joseph Bruhac, who was mentioned above, is a great writer and has a couple of short collections of legends. There are others... I just never found a good single collection. Erin
Also, Paul Goble has a series of Blackfoot stories that are published as individual picture books. He has several Lakota ones, too. (Not to mention the Cheyenne and Pawnee, as well) The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses and Gift of the Sacred Dog being our favorites. :)

Alte Veste Academy
We have and enjoy In a Circle Long Ago and The Girl Who Helped Thunder. Both are beautifully illustrated anthologies. It would be impossible to give every tribe fair time, a fact of life I had to come to terms with when we studied Native Americans. http://www.amazon.com/In-Circle-Long-Ago-Treasury/dp/0679858075/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368768766&sr=8-1&keywords=In+a+circle+long+ago http://www.amazon.com/Helped-Thunder-Native-American-Folktales/dp/1402732635/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1368768837&sr=1-2&keywords=Native+American+folk+tales
kubiac
We had these two books when I was younger and I enjoyed them both.
