Sharing a Positive Experience About Home Education!!!

Recommended Posts

We hear a lot of the negatives, so I thought that I would share a positive that happened today!

We went to the library like we always do on Tuesdays for a school aged program. It's an hour of fun, science, play, or reading. Today was "Jedi Academy". They read a story about aliens and then they each got to play with a light saber and then make one.

Anyways, while she is in there, I take that hour and research different books and media materials that I want to take out for the week. I was searching for the South East States Geography DVD of the series we are working our State Study with and they didn't have it. I went to the librarian to find a different series and she sent me to the adult side, which was fine. We found "How the States Got their Shapes" and that was something I know Melissa wanted to see when it was on TV but we missed it.

As I was checking out, the librarian asked what we were doing with all that "state stuff" and I said we were doing a unit on States. She said, "Are you home schooling? " and Melissa said "Yeah - I have a classroom of one - it's really fun!!" and she answered with a smile (genuinely) "That is so cool!!! You must have a great time learning."

We spent a few minutes talking about what we were doing for our state study. It was so nice not to get that "look" or the tell tale "OH...." when mentioning home schooling. LOL

Just thought I'd share a happy experience! :) Anyone have a happy one to share?

Oddly, our librarian got quite angry about my dd "studying" our capital city because they don't do that in prep, until I said we homeschool. Really, the tension visibly melted off. That was even before I explained that with a six year old, "studying" meant looking at books and lounging in bed reading documentaries not writing page long reports. Apparently the government needs to mind it's p's and q's, but Mum here can do what she likes.

That is actually funny to me. It's a sin if a school teaches Capitals at the wrong time, but it's okay if a Mom is teaching it. LOL

For the past two days, we've been on a "field trip" and have been visiting historic forts in Oregon and Washington. We were at a military museum and my sons were *totally* geeking out with the volunteers -- asking questions, joking around, and basically just gossiping. In the background, the two little old ladies who ran the gift shop had the following conversation.

One: "Those kids have to be homeschooled!"

The other: "I know! Just listen to them go." [pause] "I bet you they'll buy books."

One: "Of course they will, they're homeschoolers!"

[The boys stop bugging the poor volunteers and head to the gift shop...]

DS1: "DS2, did you see the Civil War graphic novels!?!? Mom, there are four of them! Look! Books!"

I looked at the ladies and just shook my head. They laughed. And they made a fine sale for a rainy, nasty Monday!

I love reading these kinds of posts! :) We haven't been at this very long so I really don't have many stories to tell. Like another poster said we often get positive reactions from people when they hear we homeschool. I have had several ladies in our church give positive comments about my kids which makes me feel good. The homeschooling world can sometimes be a lonely place, so any type of positive feedback is always nice to hear.

The closest story we have is when we were on our vacation to visit sea world. We were eating dinner at a restaurant and happened to be sitting next to a lady who was making balloon animals. She was talking to our kids and asking for their input on what kinds of animals she should make. My kids were spouting off pretty typical animals that you would expect from their age group. But when she asked for my newly 3 year olds opinion she excitedly made a request for her to make an "orca." She seemed pretty shocked that a three year old would use the term orca, I guess she expected something like Shamu or something. Her response was (in an impressed and kind way) "what kind of kids are these, these are not normal kids." I didn't think much of it but thought it was cute that my daughter had made that request (I hadn't heard her use the term orca before that, so I was a little surprised as well). I just figured that most kids her age referred to that type of whale as an orca, but I guess not. On that same trip my 5yo also recognized the beluga whales without any prompting from us. Makes me feel good that they seem to be learning something at home ;) ! That's as close to any homeschooling stories that I have. Keep em coming, I really enjoy reading positive homeschooling stories.
