Guest
So, I'm looking at my plethora of books for this fall that I'll be using for a 1st and 3rd grader. I have a few different paths I can take, as far as our history. Looking ahead to 2014-2015, I am thinking of doing MFW's CtG, but I am wondering how my daughter would do with it, as a 2nd grader. (My son would be in 4th.) The path I would like to take this fall is a world history, and then move into CtG the next fall. But, if CtG is not a good fit for a 2nd grader, then I would more likely do a US track this year and then ECC for 4th and 2nd. I don't think that I really want to do a world history overview this fall and then ECC next year, though. MFW states CtG for 4th and up, with 2nd or 3rd graders with older siblings; will she get anything out of it, though? Clear as mud? Did anyone follow that? :)
cjgrubbs
You might get more responses on the MFW board or by calling them - they are generally very helpful! I haven't used MFW but will be this fall. We are going to be doing 1850-Modern bc that is where my oldest needs to be for history. They encouraged me to have my 2nd grader do the program with us. They do offer a supplement for that program bc some of the books are too heavy for a 2nd grader. I think ECC would be really fun with a 3rd and 1st grader though. When I looked at ECC a few years back I didn't think it would be a good fit for my 6th grader so we didn't do it... I kind of wish now that we would have though :( It looks like a fun year and then when they are 4th and 2nd you could dive in to CTG. Berley
I used CtG with a fifth and second grader this year. They both loved it and have learned a ton. I think it is perfect for a second grade student.
cbollin
I think the tagalong sib will get stuff from it. bible reading ,and memory work... some fun with Greek roots.. . history - probably not a lot from Streams (but you never know... sometimes they pick up a lot and you don't realize it), but plenty to do in Ancient Egypt book..the science will be fine, the feasts book is for whole family, pyraimds, fables and trojan horse.... various crafts.. notebooking is always at age. the timeline pieces will help with the "learing pegs" of history... mgiht enjoy the read alouds. the usborne ancient world book and use the itnernet links for more.. plenty for 2nd grader... or younger tag along sib... might not like Children's Homer. I remember when my oldest was 3rd grade and did CTG the first time, I had to summarize enough of Children's Homer to keep attention. (we did ctg with her in 3rd grade, because we did ecc in 2nd grader before Adventures was written... been a long long time ago...)
joyfulhomeschooler
We chose to wait, because after looking through CtG I thought my 2nd grader was too young for most of it. I was going to pick it back up for 4th and 3rd, but now our path has changed. :) We did ECC for 1st and 3rd and it was a fun year, but my then 1st grader, doesn't remember much of it. I noticed you have a 7 year old in Bigger - what are your plans for that child? We are at the top of the HOD age range, which concerns me for the upcoming years...I'm second guessing myself and wondering if we would do better in MFW, if it's easier to combine and suit more ages.
