Bess
My mom gave us some nice Pottery Barn sheets. They have this musty smell though, and I've washed them several times now in HOT water with Tide and the smell is still there! Anyone know how to get this smell gone? Thank you! Bess
Can you dry them in the sun? Oh, I tried that too. I originally dried them in the sun because they had a bit of yellowing on them. The sun got the yellowing out but the musty smell is still there. It's puzzling. I've never had this happen before even with vintage pillowcases. Hmm. Well, my only two other suggestions are washing again in detergent and oxyclean after soaking them in it for a bit -- agitate for a minute beforehand, or washing with a cup of vinegar added to the water. Karen sn
I second the oxyclean and vinegar! One time for each.
In The Great White North
I've never had a musty smell survive bleach. Are they white? If not, you could test a bottom corner and see if they're colorfast first. I bleached some dark, bold sheets because I like paler sheets but they are still dark and bold. Elisabeth in IL
I second the oxyclean and vinegar! One time for each. I third this idea - especially the vinegar!
KatieJ
I would try Borax, or Washing Soda in the wash water, and then the Vinegar just in the rinse cycle. And again, hang them in the sun after that.
Georgie
Baking Soda. It works! You can either buy the Arm n Hammer free and clear laundry powder/liquid or just add some baking soda along with your regular detergent. Works like a charm.
