My son just started taking zyrtec for his allergies. And since it can take a little time before it to kick in, can he take a different med (like a Benedryl) until it starts to work (mainly at night...that's when he is super miserable)??

thanks.

Yes you can combine them. He may just be a bit more drowsy on the Benadryl than normal by combining two antihistamines. The zyrtec should be working partially after the first dose and pretty much maximum on day 3-4 or so. You may notice a small increase after day 3 as the irritation leaves the mucous membranes but it should be in the system and working by then. =]

I've given my eldest son both when he's been absolutely miserable. The only side effect for him (especially when he was younger; he's almost 12 now) was that the Benadryl amped him up a little bit instead of making him drowsy. His doc recently prescribed QNasl and Patanase nasal sprays for him and this has really helped. QNasl is a steroid nasal spray and Patanase is an antihistamine nasal spray. I don't know how old your son is; but, QNasl is for 12 and up and Patanase is for 6 and up.

I don't know if you've filled patanase or pataday yet, but it's about $120ish. Zatidor (now otc and generic) works as well and is $8. :)

Really? Huh. I didn't pay anywhere near that much. But I'll remember the Zatidor in case I see a price jump. Thanks for the info.

Some insurances cover it, so it may have been covered as a copay instead of the whole cash price.
