There should be a children's museum in Santa Fe. We used to go to it when I was a child, and I remember loving it. I also second the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. My favorite NM hiking trail is nowhere near where you'll be (near western border - has a rock w/graffiti dating back to the conquistadors). Hmm...Jemez Hot Springs is near Santa Fe. We used to go camping there in the summer.

I love that whole area of the state. The Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway is a beautiful drive. Taos Pueblo is a really neat place to visit, as is Bandelier National Monument. During the summer I believe you have to take the shuttle into the park at Bandelier, but there are many miles of trails for hiking once you get down there.

Los Alamos is an amazing day trip and most of what there is to see is completely free! The trolley takes you all over the place downtown, the Science Museum is free as is Fuller Lodge and the museum next to it - all definitely worth going to. If you have studied WWII at all then Los Alamos is an even more amazing place to visit - to walk through the rooms Oppenheimer et. al. were in, etc. The town has done a fabulous job with the historical sites. The drive up to Los Alamos from Santa Fe is incredible - you can even see the original road used during the Manhattan Project. The drive through the Jemez is awesome, especially when you get to the Caldera. Bandelier is definitely a full day's trip and a must-see. Depending on the age of your dc you could go to the Long House (I think that is what it is called)...if you are OK with heights. ;)

There is an interesting hiking trail off of Barranca Mesa called Los Pueblos (I believe). There are parts that are hair-raising so not advisable with young dc. The hike down to the Rio Grande is nice as well, however there are also some very steep places. The White Rock overlook is beautiful.

I absolutely love La Posada in Santa Fe - beautiful building, great food. Rancho de Chimayo outside Espanola is also wonderful for both historical site and cuisine (best fajitas I've ever had).

Sigh...I miss living there. :)
