Haiku
I'm losing my mind over this. The sentence is "That is one of the many things that make(s) you awesome." I can't figure out whether it should be "make" or "makes." I tried to diagram to figure it out but failed. Please help! 10 points for supplying the correct conjugation of the verb. Fifty points for providing a diagram! Tara
8filltheheart
"That is one of the many things that make(s) you awesome." I vote for "makes." Why? b/c "of the many things" is a prep phrase and therefore does not determine the number of the verb. To test, write the sentence That is one (thing/area/quality) that makes you awesome. The use of the word "that" is meant to replace "thing/area/quality" or in your sentence "one."
LisaKinVA
When I read this, I actually see two clauses, "That is one of the many things" and "that makes you awesome" -- the plural form of "that" is "those" and I know "those" goes with the verb "make." But...I'm not an expert.
*Michelle*
Makes. If you flip the sentence around, you could write "One of the many things that makes you awesome is that..."
Shahrazad
Makes, because it refers to ONE of the many things.
Cmm
Can "that make you awesome" be modifying "of the many things" ? I am seeing "that is one" as the simple sentence, and the rest of it modifying "one." But I'm guessing here.
cavscout96
I've always thought it was less than desireable to begin a sentence with an article. Instead of "that"... why not "Your wonderful heart," but I digress. Many things make you awesome. Your purple hair is one. :coolgleamA:
ByGrace3
One makes. Of the things is a prepositional phrase. One is the subject makes is the verb.
Haiku
I had figured it was "makes," mainly because I collapsed the sentence to come up with "One (thing) makes you awesome." Btw, the one thing of the many things that makes my friend awesome is that he still keeps the weird monster-like rubber action figure that, when he was in college he called Rapacious Man, on his desk at the architecture firm where he works. The kids and I read about a Roman emperor who was referred to as rapacious. I thought of my friend, texted him about it, and the whole issue was born. Many things make you awesome. Your purple hair is one. :coolgleamA: Aww, thanks! :D Tara
Cmm
I still see -- That (demonstrative pronoun/subject) is (verb/predicate) one (pronoun/subject complement ?) of the things (prep phrase) that make you awesome (adjective clause modifying "things). Can someone explain to me why this is wrong?
JessieC
I think it's "make" and it is modifying "things," not "one."
ByGrace3
I was taught the subject of a verb cannot be found in a prepositional phrase.
Cmm
It can't. The subject of the verb "things" is the second "that".
Cmm
Hang on. So if I'm right.... "make" has to agree with "that" -- so I was wrong and it's "that makes you awesome." Maybe?
cavscout96
things make you awesome "That is one of many" -or- That is one.... that makes you awesome ", of many things," yikes... who knows....?
