KrissiK
I wish I could help you. I've been kind of looking for something like that, too. I've had little success. I've had to content myself with books about Hannukah.

Violet Crown
I am looking for a few online video or simple explanation of what took place to end the Jewish/Hebrew Nation after the time of Christ with the Maccabees and such... I was pretty sure the Maccabean Revolt was before the time of Christ, by about two centuries.
trulycrabby
The Maccabean revolt was around 167 BCE, look for sources discussing Hasmonean rulers to learn more about the decline of Jewish rule. http://www.simpletoremember.com/articles/a/the_revolt_of_the_maccabees/
YaelAldrich
Do you mean the Bar Kochba (Bar Kosiba) Rebellion? Honestly I can't think of any children's resources about it. Mostly Talmud and such...
mamawaabangi
Yeah, probably mixing things up! What I need is info on the end of the Jewish nation... Roman era. Thanks! This is already helping.
YaelAldrich
Are you willing to look at it from an Orthodox Jewish perspective? Lemme look around...
YaelAldrich
How about this: http://www.aish.com/jl/h/cc/48944706.html or http://www.chabad.org/search/results.asp?searchWord=bar+kochba+Rebellion
mamawaabangi
I could think of no better perspective to look at it from... thank you so much! I personally, can't wait to learn more about this period of history!
mamawaabangi
Are you willing to look at it from an Orthodox Jewish perspective? Lemme look around... YaelAldrich... thoughts on hands activities our family could do?
YaelAldrich
YaelAldrich... thoughts on hands activities our family could do? Go around killing Romans? :leaving: OK, just a couple of weeks ago we (meaning Jews) celebrated the 9th of Av (Tisha B'Av), our national/religious day of sorrow. Many bad things happened, the beginning of the Inquisition, both Temples were destroyed, tach v'tat, many other pogroms, and a whole bunch of other yucky stuff. We fasted (children about 12/13 and all adults, no water and no food for 25 hours), sat on the ground, read Lamentations and other sad poetry written about the terrible things that happened to us. for three weeks before that we curtailed our happiness through not swimming, not listening to instrumental music, no clean clothes, no hot showers, no meat or wine during the week, etc. At the same time, we look forward to meriting the Third Temple and all the accompanying commandments we can observe, may it come quickly! There are numerous video presentations about the Temple and Tisha B'Av. Some summer camps make a mock up of the Temple and burn it to feel more connected to the event that happened such a long time ago. I don't know that I would flood the ground with so much blood that the earth wouldn't grow food or the other horrible things that happened during this time. You could talk about the difference between the idea of a Jewish messiah vs the Christian one (if you are inclined this way) since we Jews believe that the Jewish messiah will bring the Third Temple amongst other good things. Hope that helps, Yael
KrissiK
I just listened to a fascinating talk at a homeschool convention this weekend by Jim Weiss about the building and destruction of both temples and the Diaspora. Check out his website and see if that lecture is on CD. That should have a lot of information on the time period you're interested in. 8filltheheart
If your oldest is only in 2nd grade, this might be too complicated for what you are looking for (and more comprehensive), but Our Young Folk's Josephus is an accessible source to Jewish history. http://www.mainlesson.com/display.php?author=shepard&book=josephus&story=_contents
mamawaabangi
Thank so very much! This is all very helpful. You know, I need homeschooling just as much (or more) than my children do...
warneral
do you mean the Masada?
2_girls_mommy
Our library had exactly 2 books on Masada that were very interesting. One was a children's picture book, but very detailed, taken from Josephus' account and one was an adult book on the archeological dig. It was a great complement to the children's book because it had many pictures of real artifacts and of the dig. So you could try your library catalog for them and see what you come up with. laughing lioness
Peter O'Toole stars in an older movie about Masada. You might be interested in the amazing dig Eliat Mazar is conducting right now on King David's City. G.H. Henty has a novel For the Temple on the fall of Jerusalem. 2_girls_mommy
Do you remember the titles our author's names? Masada by Neil Waldman is the children's one. Masada: Herod's Fortress and the Zealot's Last Stand by Yigael Yadin (the archeologist) are the two we used. I just checked our library catalog :)
