We are starting next year. Is there anything we can read to catch us up to where Cycle 2 will start in regards to history? I'm sure it will be fine but I hate not starting at the beginning :) I'm looking for more "living book suggestions."

There is really no reason to catch up espcially with a 5yo. You can just jump in right at Cycle 2. We started at Cycle 3 with no problem.

But if you feel you must you might try the Half Hundred Acre Woods blog for living book suggestions. Or perhaps you could read through the timeline cards until you get to the middle ages or listen to SOTW1 CDs.

I agree. You have no catching up to do. You can do the cycles in any order. We also jumped in with cycle 3. My daughter was 4, almost 5 when we started. We did nothing before starting it, and we really enjoyed cycle 3. It all works out because you'll memorize the timeline every year, and be able to reference that when learning new events. Plus, if you stay with CC, you'll eventually get around to cycle 1. :)

We started in Cycle 3, and it was just fine! If you were jumping in with an older elementary student, I would suggest working the timeline and math facts some before you start CC, but given that your oldest is 5, you don't need to do anything to start.

I would instead spend the next year or two really solidifying the skills (reading, writing, & math). If you have extra time, do a geography or world cultures unit. When CC gets back around to Cycle 1, start history with the ancients.
