saraha
I need some inexpensive ideas for things to do around Myrtle Beach besides the beach. Thanks!
Mama Geek
Fall in love with a great guy and get married about a year later...oh wait you mean for your family  That is where I met dh about 20 years ago. I haven't been there in along time, but there are places like Alabama Theater and there are several others there as well. There are tons of putt putt places, go carts, water parks, amusement parks, great seafood places, lots of night clubs along the strip with good music and of course the beach. There is also Barefoot landing for shopping. I have lots of really good memories of Myrtle Beach ETA: I did lots of these things as a pretty poor college student, I have no idea what current prices are. momto3innc
Ripley's aquarium is not cheap (or worth the crazy prices they charge) but they have great homeschool rates year round. I think it's $6 a person.
Pawz4me
Inexpensive and Myrtle Beach don't go together too well any more. We like to walk around/shop/people watch at Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach. The new boardwalk (where the Pavilion used to be, in downtown Myrtle Beach) is also a fairly nice walking and people watching spot. If you get some of the coupon books you can usually find good deals on mini golf.
CountitallJoy
Honestly? There are TONS of things to do, but I wouldn't consider any of it inexpensive. Any of the theater tickets are going to run at or near $50 apiece and Ripley's Aquarium tickets are around $25 for adults, $15 for kids aged 3-11. Family Kingdom (amusement park) is $26 for unlimited rides, all ages, or around $1 per ticket with the rides requiring 2 or more tickets each. Paws is right, inexpensive and MB don't go together anymore at all.
Serenade
We camp at Myrtle Beach so we spend most of our time walking on the beach or just hanging out. The campground has a pool and mini golf, too. There are lots of mini golf place in Myrtle Beach -- we went on a tour once, and I think I remember that Myrtle Beach had the most mini golf places per capita in the US. Or something like that. Once we went on a jeep tour (we were staying in a hotel that time), and I thought the jeep tour was worth everything we paid. We had a private guide for about 8 -10 people, and we cruised through MB down to Surfside, Huntington State Beach and more, stopping along the way at sites of interest with lots of history thrown in. It was about $50 a person, I think.
bnbacademy
Nothing is cheap, but we like Brookgreen Gardens . After walking thru the gardens and viewing the sculptures included, you can take a guided riverboat tour and see alligators!
SproutMamaK
We like taking our fishing poles and going fishing off the piers together. It's fairly cheap (save for pier admission), and exciting for the kids.
saraha
Does anyone know anything about the Waccatee zoo? Or Brookgreen gardens?
Pawz4me
The last time we were at the Waccatee Zoo was probably eight or nine years ago. So I can't say for sure what it's currently like. But at that time we thoroughly enjoyed it. It's mostly shaded, so it was a great way to get out of the sun and away from the sand for a bit. It's been so many years since I've been to Brookgreen Gardens that I hesitate to comment. I really don't remember much about it.
bnbacademy
Does anyone know anything about the Waccatee zoo? Or Brookgreen gardens? Brookgreen Gardens is a vast garden interspersed with artistic sculptures, some from Greek mythology, legends and fauna. There is a separate museum of sculptures also. It has beautiful flowers (in September, anyway), and the sculptures are amazing. It is a pleasant afternoon walk thru many acres of trees, hedges, lawns, and gardens. Last year we also went on the guided river cruise and saw alligators (they were much too big for my liking). We try to go every year, and even our 2 ds enjoy it. KarenNC
Definitely get the homeschool tickets for Ripleys (listed under group rates)----skip the ticket kiosks and go to the customer service window to the right of the entrance and ask for them. You will have to show proof of homeschooling. http://www.ripleyaqu...reservations/ and it can be just your family. Brookgreen Gardens is beautiful. If you are going that far down (Murrells Inlet), you might want to check out Huntington Beach State Park http://www.huntingtonbeachsc.org/ . We haven't made it there yet, but I'm interested in checking it out, as well as Atalaya Castle which is there. The Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School and Museum looks interesting, but call before you go to be sure they're open, even during posted open hours. We tried to go last year and it was closed during the listed open hours. http://www.cityofmyr...oredschool.html
saraha
You guys are so helpful. What about inexpensive, family freindly, locally owned restaruants? Especially on the way down to Huntington beach and Brookgreen gardens?
