Esperella
My son will be 7 and in 2nd grade next year. This year we did WWE1 and FLL1. He does not like FLL1 at all. We stopped a few months into it. He will be doing AAR2 next year, but that's about all Im sure of. I thought the IEW Bible Heroes looked like fun but it says you have to take a seminar? I don't think I'm up for that right now. I'm sure it's a wonderful thing, but I'm a little brain fried atm. I just want something fun that encourages him to be creative, and still does a good job teaching the basics. Also, spelling. I need help with that. I dont feel up to doing AAS and AAR, because, waaaay too many tiles, and flash cards make him ragey. But honestly I never even thought to do spelling! So, I'm a little overwhelmed right now :)
alisoncooks
I have a very (very) active girl, who'll be 7 in a month and will be in 2nd grade next school year. We did a Scholastic Success with Grammar workbook this year (well, most of it) and I found it very gentle and easy to get done. It doubled as our handwriting practice. I've also looked into Bible Heroes -- but I also don't plan on taking the seminar... I'm tempted to just get it and see if it's do-able. ETA: I just wanted to add that you don't have to do it all. For my DD -- since she's still a beginning reader -- I'm bypassing spelling and formal grammar (we may finish the Scholastic book mentioned above since it's so easy). The only formal writing we'll do is the narration/copywork from Elemental History, and the 1st grade workbooks from Just Write (which are basic writing, leaning toward the creative writing side of things) but are simple and do-the-next-thing. Zuzu822
Thanks! Ill look into those. I just feel like no matter what I'm going to miss or forget something. My DS is turning 7 and in second grade next year too, and I feel the same way! Our current LA (and going forward to the fall): *Shurley English *AAS *WWE 1 (finishing) *IEW Bible Heroes (for the summer/early fall) *Cursive (in the fall) *Brave Writer Jot it Down (here and there for something different) If anyone hasn't seen the Bible Heroes and wants more info, I'm happy to look through it and try to help! Lots of boys
For my ds 7 who will be a 2nd grader next fall I plan to use: -WW1 -FLL 1 -not sure if he will like this but I am going to give it a try. if it goes terribly, I will likely skip grammar altogether :crying: -ASS 2 9we dropped AAR after level 1 and moved to AAS instead. I agree - doing both would be too hard. Once they are reading well, I like to move to AAS instead of AAR -ETC - books 4 and 6 -HWOT - 2 This ds is very day dreamy so I am a little concerned about how next eyar will go. I delayed starting WWE and FLL this year in 1st because he didn't seem ready. Instead we focused on finishing up his phonics (OPGTR - 10 lessons left = YAHOO!!) and reading, reading, reading. Esperella
Ok this is so helpful to see what you all are using. It also gives me some ideas of fun things to add on. I feel now that school is not fun anymore, just all work. With the bible heroes, do you have to take the seminar? Or could I get away with not doing it? Laura Corin
Hobbes enjoyed Galore Park Junior English 1 at that age. It's light on spelling though, so you might need to do more. Samples here. Each lesson has the same format. Laura

Ariston
It also gives me some ideas of fun things to add on. I feel now that school is not fun anymore, just all work. This is why my favorite LA to do with a 7 year old boy is none....to wait until they're older ;). Sorry, probably not helpful advice. For me the answer was reading instruction with spelling built in, and then waiting to do the rest. School was drudgery for us at 7 and I realized it would be not only more fun but also more effective to wait one or two years. Sometimes we would read Grammarland, which was fun. I plan on doing WWE this year and MCT when he's ready (later this year.)

I agree w/ MCT or LLATL..lightly..maybe ETC for spelling..or just wait..when he is ready- MCT and IEW All Things Fun and Fascinating...w/ Megawords. Have fun deciding! Esperella
I'm really interested in the IEW stuff but I don't know about buying all the things. It says I have to do writing with the reading, and I really love AAR. it's been such an amazing blessing for my son. Do you have to do both? I don't know that I have time to sit and read all this stuff and watch videoes though if I did that a long time ago I might not bring up researching stuff till 2:00 am every day... Esperella
Oh, and I appreciate the comments about holding off a bit. My son has SPD and possibly ADHD. I really go back and forth about holding him back vs selling him short iykwim. I held off a year on reading and now he's a struggling reader but he enjoys it and its not a fight every day. Which was my ultimate goal. I get really carried away worrying that because I'm the sole person in charge of him being educated enough to one day have a career and then provide for a wife who stays home with my oodles of grandchildren, right? It's funny because my DH was homeschooled and he he's super smart and successful. When I started this I did it trying to make sure that I instilled a love of learning, and the ability to find and process information, and that's all I really needed to do. But when it comes down to the daily ins and outs I want my kids to be on par with the kids I read about here, and I feel like I'm really failing at that. dbmamaz
MCT is supposed to start at 3rd grade for gifted kids. I liked Language Smarts from Critical Thinking Co for my son in 3rd (we used 2nd grade book) because its more logic-based, and he's a math kid, not a language kid. It covered basics with very little reading or writing, which was what he needed
3monkeys
Learning Language Arts Through Literature Red or Yellow (depending on writing ability, not reading skill) . Can you elaborate on what you mean by writing ability? I'm in the process of starting this with my soon to be 2nd grader. I assumed I would put him in Red because of his reading ability. You've intrigued me!
