The Henry Ford Museum/Village in Detroit

We get annual passes. It's a really fun place. I recommend the "ride" passes - you get to ride the carousel, a model-T Ford, the train, and in a horse drawn carraige.

And, yes. You could spend a couple DAYS there and still not see everything.

Oh - and it's a little outside the city by about 20 minutes or so. What else are you doing in Detroit? My dh works at a downtown church and would give you a tour if you'd like.

we were there last summer...but had to leave prematurly because my son got sick. HOWEVER, we plan to go bakc becasue the kids wanted to...and because we missed so much. It was awesome. They have a traveling exhibit there too...last summer was Titanic and that was very neat. You could easily spend 2 days there. But totally worth going to. We only saw the museaum...not the village...we want to go back and see some more.

There are factory tours available too...cost extra and takes time...we didn't do that...so I can't say if it's worth the time and money or not.

We're going to see a Detroit Tigers game on Wed, July 31 -- planning everything around that. Any other recommendations would be wonderful! We plan to spend 2-3 nights in Detroit. Active grandparents coming with us. We have two energetic kids, ages 12 & 10. We're adventurous, love being outdoors & seeing things off the beaten path. Restaurant (reasonably prices) recommendations welcome, too!

check out www.utrmichigan.com

Host travels around Michigan and finds unique places/restaurants, etc. On the home page there is a tab at the top for looking for specific locations. I checked and there are at least 2 shows shot in and around Detroit last year. You might find fun to do or at least someplace new to eat!

This is one of our very favorite places!

If you need a place to stay, we've had excellent success with the Best Western only 2-3 miles from the museum.

Our favorites are the Wright Brothers Bicycle shop and Edison's labs. I'm related to Edison though and dh is an expert in both subjects so that has some to do with it. Everything in the museum is wonderful.

Take your time if you can. It is very difficult to do both in two days so if possible, by a multi-day pass.

We get an annual pass every year and it is one of our favorite places! You can easily spend more than one day and, if you end wanting to do so, getting a membership may work out to be a cheaper option than day passes.

The Detroit Zoo (in Royal Oak) and the Detroit Institute of Art are also family friendly places that we enjoy.

Love it! We live in the area and go (to the museum) every couple of months. Money is tight right now, but we plan to get the year round passes to the village next year or so. The majority of my vivid childhood history-related memories go back to that place.

Only been to the museum part but it is FABULOUS! We hope to go back someday - our kids were so little it was hard to actually take in a whole lot. But there is a lot to see, and they have activities going on for kids (I remember one building cars to race down ramps and helping put parts together for the model T (it actually changed throughout the day so the car was complete at the end)). The Children's Museum in Ann Arbor is also fabulous (can't remember what it's called). We had reciprocal membership, so it was free!

It's the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum. If you (or anyone else planning a MI trip :)) end up in Ann Arbor, you can visit lots of freebies at the University of Michigan. There is the University of Michigan Museum of Art, University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, and The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.
