sltress
My son will finish SWR at the end of 6th grade. The book indicates a child could be done by the end of 5th, but we started late. Anyway, so after we have completed and reviewed all the lists, what do we use for spelling after that? The last list indicates a spelling level of a college freshman. Would spelling then become just integrated with all other writing vs a specified spelling program? Thx!
RootAnn
According to The Wise Guide, you stop doing spelling via SWR when your child 'tests out' via the diagnostic tests, whenever that is. They want to make sure you go through the lists at least twice each. I note that I barely 'test out' on those darn diagnostics because the words at the end are pretty darn hard, so I wouldn't be afraid of just having kids look up words they spell wrong (in their other subjects) after that. I don't think you'd NEED to do another spelling program if your kid is getting all 50 (or 45-50) words correct consistently on the various diagnostic tests. My oldest isn't anywhere near testing out, but I'm not going to do spelling next school year (7th). My dd#2 will probably have to do spelling until high school at the current progress she's making, so it depends on the kid, IMO.
sltress
Oh I must have missed that in the Wise Guide. I looked in both books but couldn't find anything. Thanks! That makes sense. Yes, I guess when we as adults can't spell a word we look it up. I haven't even thought to try the diagnostic tests on myself. :)
happyhomemaker
Dd should finish SWR at the beginning of next year (6th for her). We keep a misspelled words list that she reviews periodically. We will keep doing this even though we will be finished with formal spelling. I will also encourage her to look up words in the dictionary. Mom0012
Well, I have a 5th grader that used SWR for K through 3rd grades. Then, we switched to Megawords in 4th grade because I wanted a workbook program. Now I see we have 4 more workbooks (2 more years of spelling almost every day) to complete, so I'm switching her back to SWR. She tests into the 7th grade lists, so we are going to finish up with lists V to Z next year and that will be it. I don't want to be doing spelling past 6th grade, especially with a strong speller. I think just keeping a list of misspelled words is a great idea.
RootAnn
I switched to Megawords at the beginning of this year for dd#1 because I thought it would be less time intensive (for me) and that it would help her to learn syllibification. However, I personally didn't find it to be any less time intensive. It also didn't seem to be helping her spell better. It wasn't that long until we switched back to SWR (like Pastel). I like SWR's method better. I didn't click with the teaching method(s) in Megawords.
sltress
List of misspelled words and dictionary...PERFECT! I can do that! :) Like some of you...did SWR then switched to "less intensive"...R&S for us...not much improvement in spelling...back to SWR. Yikes, I almost sold it. :)
