ravinlunachick
I grew up listening to what some of you may know as "bluegrass gospel." We just called it church music. Anyway, every now and then I get nostalgic for those old songs. Share your favorites with me! This one seems particularly appropriate for today, considering that it's been grey and rainy for over a week, and we've got at least 2 more days of it. Our yard is soggy, and the roads are starting to flood. So, an seems especially nice. ;)
Chris in VA
We have a special hymnal in our church that is a supplement to the regular one--it's called Lift Every Voice and Sing, and it's mostly old gospel music drawing from African American roots. Our parish sings out of it about one Sunday a month. I really like --but I know it from George Clooney's O Brother Where Art Thou?. ETA: Oops, I knew it was down IN the river! sorry bout that. ravinlunachick
My daddy never would go to church with us except on Easter Sunday, but he would sing these songs around the house. I remember snuggling up to him, listening to his deep voice rumble in his chest as he sang , or . Sometimes, a bunch of us kids from the neighborhood would be all inspired by Vacation Bible School down at the Church of God, and we'd start singing , and he'd join in for the bass parts. Speaking of the Church of God, I recall that my two favorite hymns there were and Victory in Jesus.
Caitilin
I heard this last night, and this reminded me of it:

Down in the River is my dd's favorite song off that album. :)
Debbi in Texas
Sometimes I miss the old songs. Every once in awhile our church has a service where we do all old songs and it is great. I love the ones already mentioned. Amazing Grace is hard to beat also. Not exactly "bluegrass", but from the same time period-Dottie Rambo was a good one for singing some of that type music. Giraffe
Just spent the past hour introducing DD to the Gaithers and gospel music. Thanks for the reminders!

She sure was! We can't forget Vestal Goodman, either. I don't want to leave out Precious Memories or Blessed Assurance, but I haven't found a version on Youtube that sounds "right" to me. Everything seems overproduced somehow. Apparently no one is recording at little country churches and putting it online, LOL. ETA: Hang on! I found a playlist that is just the sort of thing I was looking for:
annandatje
Drifting Too Far From The Shore Rank Stranger The following two compositions are not exactly old timey gospel but they share the same rousing passion: Gram Parsons's "In My Hour of Darkess" Julie Miller's "All My Tears"
TravelingChris
I can suggest checking out the Southern Gospel channel on Pandora.

And preach for that matter. His name was Rev. Murrell Ewing. Beulahland and He Touched Me are two more I really liked.
