Katy
If there was "the perfect" homeschool blog that focused on providing a superior education and avoided religious and social/political agenda topics entirely, what would you like to read about most? Also, if you have expertise in a particular area and would like to write an article or a series of articles, please let me know.
Jyniffrec
Any subject, as long as the content has depth, that has to do with education. As teachers we have to wear all the hats and have some level of knowledge of all the subjects we teach. That being said, here are some things I would like to see: - Teaching Math - Teaching Writing - Analysis of heavy duty subjects with a lot of depth having to do with classical education or other philosophies - maybe an education on the great writers and teachers that came before us since our feet are already on the ground and we are trying to teach this stuff. - Teaching Science That's all I have at the moment. briansmama
I'd love to see regular columns for science, history, literature, art and iPad apps/resources. It would be great to rotate columnists so we could see how different approaches work with these subjects. I'd like specific, concrete ideas and how to implement them if they appeal to me and would work with my family. For example, I have a friend who's an artist and shared with me techniques to help support my dc drawing interests. This would work really well as a column post with a list of materials/supplies and ideas on getting started.
Random
I would like to see side-by-side comparisons of curriculum. For instance, when I'm deciding on math, I will make a spreadsheet with information like price, level of teacher involvement, number of lessons, style (spiral, mastery), consumable, etc. Then, I have a great overview of the options. I'd love to see something like this for math, science, writing, phonics/reading, etc. by grade level. It takes me hours to do this for each subject each year! I'd love to have it done for me. :) I'd also like to see: -educational app reviews -scheduling advice -homeschooling success stories -scholarship opportunities
Carrie12345
I would like to read about eclectic homeschool/life styles. I've already read a million books/blogs/articles/posts about specific methods and theories. I wish I had learned sooner about mixing things up and not trying to follow someone else's ideal. I'd especially be interested in relaxed styles that AREN'T unschooling! It gets frustrating to read all these wonderful things about interests and passions and dirt and paint... and then be told how limiting and needlessly authoritative it is to require "book work" or math facts. Many people are capable of middle ground, tyvm! ;-)
Sebastian (a lady)
If there was "the perfect" homeschool blog that focused on providing a superior education and avoided religious and social/political agenda topics entirely, what would you like to read about most? Also, if you have expertise in a particular area and would like to write an article or a series of articles, please let me know. Regular columns on upper middle school or high school level science investigations and experiments that could be done without expensive equipment (in other words, going to a hardware store for wood and metal tubing is great, buying $100 of one time use equipment isn't). Would need to include not only the outline of the investigation, but also the scientific principle behind it (ie, equations), common problems and suggestions for expanding the idea. Regular articles about long term competitions that are open to homeschoolers. Things like Math Counts, AMC math tests, National Latin/Greek exam, National History Day competition, Poetry Out Loud, science competitions, rocketry teams, Odyssey of the Mind. Article should include an outline of the competition, profile of current or past participants, description of the expected investment of time and money, and contact information for the organization. A timeline for participating would also help (ex. if you need to register in Nov for a Feb exam or if the mentor training for a March competition starts in August. High school and college counseling columns with information on subjects like the PSAT (ex. it is only given once a year, high schoolers from 9-11th grade can take it, you have to register directly with the school), SAT (register online, may want to start taking by junior year), Advanced Placement (what it is, how to create a course at home, how to find online courses, timeline for finding an exam site), vocational counseling (what to do if your kid isn't ready for college, how do you help them find their niche). Barbara H and Lori D on the high school board could be really great resources for this. Please don't fall into the lane of "college is an evil place so my 12 year olds are getting their degree by doing college at home with CLEP exams and a college you've never heard of." That lane is well promulgated enough imho. Maybe a college column that profiled several types of schools each month. A selective/elite school, a state school, a school that is a standout in a particular program, and a small school that might only have a regional reputation. The goal of the columns would be to help people think about what different types of schools might look for and offer. Especially helpful for parents of 7-10th graders who are still making critical decisions that will affect what college options they have. I would love, love, love to read about sucessful homeschool athletes, especially those who have gotten through the NCAA eligibility clearinghouse. Farrar
The main thing I would like to see would be regular articles about educational and brain research as written to homeschoolers. All the other things that I would be interested in (book lists and recommendations, iPad stuff, day in the life kind of stuff, project ideas, etc.) are all things that I feel like I can find already.
