Bree
My ds LOVES SM!! We have tried TT, Horizons, and MUS and he wont have anything to do with anything other than SM lol. Anyway we are coming across the problem of him not remembering concepts very well. We are on 2B and working on Multiplication and Division and he is forgetting how to carry and borrow with addition and subtraction. Is there anything I can add in that can help with review, or should i look into another program with more review. I hate to switch because he likes SM, but I don't want this to be a constant thing about forgetting how to do what he has learned already because of lack of review. Or maybe I am worrying for nothing :) Thanks for the advice :)
Arcadia
I use worksheets from MEP (free) for review on topics that my kids forgot. Some people here use the SM IP or CWP for review.
boscopup
Are you using IP or CWP? Either (or both) of those can be used a little bit behind where you are now. I find that even if my kids forget a concept, they remember it pretty quickly once I go over it briefly again. It's not really completely forgotten - it's just not as easily accessible as I'd like. ;) Singapore repeats and repeats and repeats those topics each year, so by time you get to the upper grades, they're pretty well ingrained. Crimson Wife
We do normal Singapore lessons M-Th and then use Fridays to do reviews. I save the end-of-chapter reviews to do 1 semester behind. Other times I use placement tests from other programs (MM, CLE, TT, Horizons, etc.) With those I will tell my student to skip anything that Singapore has not yet covered. jennynd
If he just forget the "how". Just do couple questions before each lesson. Just write question on white board and let him solve it
Peplophoros
I make several photocopies of the relevant"mental math" sections and have my kids do them (occasionally) for extra practice/review. I only do this for concepts I don't want lost, like the ones you're talking about, and multiplication facts.
chicagoshannon
We had this issue at the beginning of 2B but by the time she was done there was no forgetting. They do so many of those problems in 2B.
Alice
I use the Mental Math sheets at the back of the HIG for review/drill. If you don’t have them you could easily just make up a page of problems to do once or twice a week. I’ve also found that sometimes my son forgets how to do something. If I can quickly remind him and he says “Oh, yeah!†and move on I don’t worry about it. If it seems like he’s struggling with remembering the concept we go back and review that for a bit. And even though it’s supposedly mastery (I think, I get all confused on the spiral vs. mastery thing) you will see tons of the regrouping problems again. Random
Just one more specific suggestion: For borrowing or carrying, we review the concept with $1, $10 and $100 bills because my son seems to forget how it works from time to time. The hands-on, concrete experience helps him more than practicing on paper.
Bree
Thank you those are great ideas! Totally forgot about the mental math work in the HIG. I will get that out and have him review some each day and then maybe get the IP and CWP for over the summer. Love the ideas about using the money for borrowing. I don't think he would mind doing that at all :)
