Coco_Clark
What is your favorite fairy tale collection? I want to focus our read aloud time this summer on some classic fairy tales. I greatly prefer originals vs disneyfied versions and my boy (5) does ok with intensity and violence (we've read both the velveteen rabbit and hansel and gretel recently) but I own Grimms and honestly it's a bit "much" on the gore scale for me. Arcadia
My boys read this one a few times The Golden Book of Fairy Tales (Golden Classics)
kubiac
We just got Anne Rockwell's The Three Bears & Fifteen Other Stories and it's ideal for the preschool set. Treasury of Bedtime Stories illustrated by Hilda Offen has also been a good volume for us.
Rosie_0801
We're reading Andrew Lang's Blue fairy book. So far, so good.
DaffodilDreams
We're reading Andrew Lang's Blue fairy book. So far, so good. We like Lang's fairy tales, too.
lorisuewho
I like Lang's Blue Fairy also. However, so far this one (Reader's Digest World's Best Fairy Tales) has proved to be my favorite. It think I got the recommendation from Latin Centered Curriculum. I apologize I can't do an embedded link for some reason this morning but you can find it used on amazon for pretty cheap. Chrysalis Academy
Phillip Pullman (of the His Dark Materials trilogy) just published a retelling of 50 Brothers Grimm tales. He is a darn good storyteller. My dd6 is currently anti-fairy tale after we read some Lang stories without pre-screening. I won't do that again. She still likes Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, and some of the old familiars, but is nervous about trying anything new after having been shocked by a few. It was my bad, I should have read them first. So do be careful!
three4me
About six months ago I went on a big search for our favorite fairy tales book. I borrowed many from the library and found some of the stories to gruesome, some of them had pictures I didn't really love, etc. We ended up sticking with this one, which suits our needs very well. The illustrations are beautiful, the stories are very nice and quite true to originals, but the wording is tamed down a bit. Both my kids love when we read this together.
