Giraffe
Well, my long awaited and much worried over Cuisenaire rods arrived today in all their wooden glory!! Given that there is a postal workers strike going on here this was huge, and tells me that I CAN order some things for delivery. I presented them to DD, showing her that they were a math tool and ecstatic to have her take them, manipulate them, and be solving Calculus problems by dinner. I came back in from the kitchen to find the ones were children, the twos, threes and fours were mommies, and the eights and nines were teachers. Everyone was positioned just as we were for a school assembly/show last week. DD was directing everyone and singing. Yeah, she's a Dreamer. I think calculus is going to have to wait. Eagle
Haha! Ds insists the c-rods are for building mini-golf courses (I have no idea where this comes from). He makes mazes with them and rolls a ball through. Although recently he has expanded to building towers with the rods and the 100-flats. He has the ability to immediately identify each rod as its corresponding number, even though we never discussed how they relate to numbers. But he refuses to use them for math. Hopefully you have better success with your dd.
Giraffe
Hopefully! Poor thing just doesn't get counting, but can move nine spaces on a Monopoly board in one fell swoop.
Heathermomster
So glad that the c-rods arrived and that your child is having fun with them.
Farrar
I was first introduced to the C-rods in a mini-seminar about using math manipulatives many years ago and the grown ups all, of course, immediately started playing with the ones on the tables before the seminar started. And the guy teaching it was like, "Always allow time to play with the rods. Like I'm doing for you right now."
BarbecueMom
Haha! I would be the "two" mommy, because I'm short and can't reach anything. DS4 built a c-rod race track on my living room carpet this evening. That was followed by DS3's dump truck of 1-4 rods being poured on the track. Followed by DS4 chasing DS3 from the room and trying to whack him with a butterfly net...
