momma aimee
the title pretty much says it all. Big Brother (7.5, first grade) is about done with ETC 3.5 and i just don't feel he is read for book 4. He is good with silent `e' at the end of the word makes the first vowel say its name; but he doesn't seem to remember it without prmpting. The second half starts on vowel digraphs, e.g. `ee', `ea', and i really do not feel he is down pat with them. I know book 4 moves on to things like ending (-ness and so on) and i feel bee needs more of a strong "use" of where we are now. anyone know how other phonic work books (like plaid phonics for example) "match up" with ETC -- I am not sure which book to buy I want to do some on at least vowel digraphs before we move on. ??? skeeterbug
Have you looked at ETC 5? Many people skip 4 and go to 5, then come back to 4 later.
kristi26
I would not suggest skipping to book 5. We did EtC 3, 4, and 5 this year. After reading that many people skipped to 5 and came back to 4, we tried that in our house. It was an epic fail! DD was super frustrated with book 5. So I went back to book 4 though I wasn't positive she was ready. She ended up loving it and did really well with it! Can you play some reading games to go over the stuff he needs? I don't know if any of these help, but we love playing games on pbskids.org (mostly the Word World and Super Why games).

Pinterest has some game ideas and links to free phonics worksheets. I'd just plan a few weeks of fun review... I wouldn't skip 4 either... we're just finishing up 3 and have 4 & 5 on our shelf. I looked at both and I think you need the skills taught in 4 to successfully do 5... (some kids may just be able to make that jump, but my DD has been a slower reader and needs explicit instruction). When we finish 3, I plan on buying the Words Their Way Level B (2nd) and working through it. http://www.christian...67603/pd/26760X

Bree
We tried book 4 but it was so confusing since most of it covers syllables and the rules of dividing words. It truthfully confused me. We went on to book 5 and had no problem.
Angel
We also skipped 4, with no problems! We never came back to it. Book 4 is just odd man out with concepts farther along than Book 3 or 5. We went from ETC to All About Spelling and never looked back. There is really no need to try and match up programs with ETC. Use it and readers appropriate for his age. When you are finished (or he is finished with the books, my dd was ready to move on before we got to the end), find a spelling program you like and start there. momma aimee
i really want to repeat the material of books 3 and 3.5 -- but i am not sure how to do it --
loulou belle
Primary Phonics book 3 is a repeat of etc book 3 and 3.5. I bought the Primary Phonics books for my dd. I am not in love with the Primary Phonics books, but they will fill a gap between ETC book 3 and the higher levels. I am also using the readers "Scamp and Tramp" and "Soft and White" Both are sold at Rainbow Resources.

ammv15
I would just skip it but soundcityreading.com and progressivephonics.com are free supplements that are great for practice.
Monica_in_Switzerland
i really want to repeat the material of books 3 and 3.5 -- but i am not sure how to do it -- We abandoned the ETC ship in 3.5 and switched to phonics pathways. You can move as fast or as slow as you'd like through PP. We started at the beginning, and sped through to gain confidence. Taking that time to review seemed to also help the next step click. We also used Reading Pathways on and off. Once we got two-thirds through PP, we moved on to McGuffey readers. That's what worked for us!
