Books on Biology

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a list of titles of good books on biology. My sons have studied animals and plants, some evolution and some ecology and I wanted them to study biology in general at the more micro level. I want to expose them to information that will be comprehensive enough to prepare them to audit a first-year university biology course. My sons are 9 and 11 but because of their weird combination of special needs and giftedness they can't do experiments or written exercises but absorb written information very easily and can read at the child and adult level. I am looking for good books from picture books to textbooks and books for adults, books that my library is likely to carry.

These are more biochemistry/genetics. They are all at the high school level.

The Way Life Works

The Cartoon Guide to Genetics

The Stuff of Life

Also, have a look at Biozone's modular books including titles like evolution, anatomy and physiology, environmental science, microbiology and biotechnology, and cell biology and biochemistry, etc. They are high school level and very very well designed. The website has extensive samples. They keep to black and white printing to keep costs down and allow them to be updated regularly to keep with current research. Most are available on Amazon.

I am guessing that having your sons auditing a uni-level class, you won't be too concerned about mature themes? So I am not including what to preview first. If it's a concern, I would preview King Solomon's Ring (and also the Cartoon Guide to Genetics that Ruth mentioned above).

A few of the books on my high school Bio/ AP Bio year booklist. I'm still compiling the list and will update later if I can remember to:

Either The Way Life Works or Exploring The Way Life Works by Hoagland -- we have the latter so I will probably go with that

A Field Guide to Bacteria -- son has started reading it off an on, quite an accessible resource so far!

King Solomon's Ring -- very funny!

Lives of a Cell -- I haven't read this yet but I know it's hailed as a classic

Cats Are Not Peas -- quite funny and interesting but I stopped mid way for reasons I can't remember. Not because I didn't like it.

Selected pages from the Illustrated Origin of the Species

The Private Life of Plants -- we are Attenborough fans :D

If you are looking for micro/cell biology, we have quite enjoyed Fran Balkwill's "Enjoy Your Cell's" picture book series. There are 4 32p picture books including the eponymous first volume. They cover cell structure, dna, immunology, etc at a basic level. If you have limited previous exposure they are a great way to get a quick overview and most libraries have these or the previous series by the same author.
