kfeusse
and if so, will the magnets scratch the surface?
nmoira
Yes, magnetic. We haven't had a problem with scratching. If you're worried, just use soft magnet strips.
kfeusse
what about finger prints? is it horrible?
Parrothead
Yes, finger prints and other dirt and residues are horrible. I have a stainless trash can that I can't get to look clean and my stainless electric kettle is horrific looking as well. I don't want anymore stainless items in my house. nmoira
what about finger prints? is it horrible? Ours is brushed stainless steel (maybe they all are?). Minimal problem with fingerprints, especially with the number of magnets we have. :D

PrairieSong
The front of ours (probably almost ten years old) is not magnetic but the black sides are. It shows fingerprints horribly, though I have heard newer ones have a different finish that hides them much better.
Parrothead
But those are shiny stainless steel, right? No, they both have matte finishes. Not like my pots. (Oh, and I take back what I said about no more stainless. I'll buy pots and utensils. No more matte stainless)

Mommyof4ks
Our stainless fridge is not magnetic, and it is a matte finish. It does show finger prints badly, but I just clean it every couple of days and it looks great. The black sides of mine are magnetic, and the magnets do not scratch it. itsheresomewhere
Ours is magnetic. It is 7 years old and still looks really good. It is the finger print resistant finish. I wipe it down with a microfiber wet with water once a month or so. For those with finger print issues- If you wipe it down with a tiny, tiny amount of olive oil it repels finger prints. Dandelion
Ours is not magnetic (it's only magnetic on the sides). For those with finger print issues- If you wipe it down with a tiny, tiny amount of olive oil it repels finger prints. Great tip, thanks! Wheres Toto
Ours was new last year and is not magnetic except on the sides. The front is a brushed surface and definitely shows fingerprints. I put a couple small Command strip clips on the front to hold a grocery list and notes.

umsami
My Mom's is...but the one we have now in the house we're renting is not. I assumed all were, so this was quite a surprise. :)
nmoira
which fridge do you have?? It's a Maytag, a couple years old. But with all the comments about fingerprints, I'm wondering if maybe I've got the only kids who use the door handle.
caroljenn
I had my own housecleaning business for 10 years and just stopped cleaning 4 months ago. I told my husband that I will never ever ever get stainless appliances. They look so good for the first month or so, and then it all goes downhill. They get fingerprints, but they also never recover from anything being spilled/splattered on them, you can't scratch something off if you didn't notice it and try to get it off later, you have to use the special stainless cleaner, and it ends up streaky no matter what you do or what brand you use. Yuck. I will stick with my goofy white appliances that I can clean.
laundrycrisis
Ours is brushed. It shows water stains that I cannot get off with anything. The front is not magnetic, but the sides are.
Plateau Mama
Mine is not magnetic. I use pledge on my stainless and do not have a fingerprint problem anymore.

Its a pain :( It doesn't show fingerprints because its its not shiny or anything.
kbpaulie
Not magnetic. Covered w/ fingerprints. Can't get/ keep it clean. Wouldn't buy again.
*Lulu*
Magnetic, shows prints, can be scratched, still would buy again. (I have these minions to do my bidding and my bidding includes them wiping it down frequently. :p )

LaCEmom
IIRC real stainless is not magnetic, but there are a lot of "looks like stainless" options now that are magnetic. We have the latter. It's brushed and does show fingerprints, but not terribly. I would buy it again. We don't have any issues with splashes not being able to be wiped off entirely. That would be awful! In my previous kitchen I had all black. Talk about fingerprints! I hated the black, I had to clean all the appliances every day or they were covered in fingerprints. nmoira
IIRC real stainless is not magnetic, but there are a lot of "looks like stainless" options now that are magnetic. Not all stainless steel is magnetic, but some is; it depends what's added and how during manufacture. If you purchase a sheet from a building supply store, it probably won't be magnetic.
