Gentlemommy
That's awesome! I just got the first DragonBox yesterday, and dd8 played 40 levels!!! I don't know that she is ready for the second app, but it's nice to know its there! Thank you SpyCar for suggesting the app on another thread, she's loved playing it! Spy Car
I'd been in communication with them back in February, letting them know how awesome we felt their product was, but also letting them know that just when we were "hooked" and wanting more, it was over. They said to stay tuned :D Now to figure out the new release. Are DragonBox 2 and DragonBox 12 the same thing? Bill
boscopup
The Android name is also 12+, but in the screenshots it says 2, so I think they're the same thing. Question: If we haven't used it before, do we need to go through 1 first?
Spy Car
OK, the original DragonBoxPlus (which was the full version, there was a "lite" version too) has been re-named DragonBox 5+, and the new release is DragonBox 12+. Somewhat odd naming conventions, but whatever. Bill

crazyforlatin
My decision-making ability is weird. I am willing to immediately pay $10 for this app for my kid, but hem and haw for days over the same amount for Pages, which I need for work. Boscopup, not sure which kid of ours here will get to play first, but hopefully someone will let you know soon.
Spy Car
Question: If we haven't used it before, do we need to go through 1 first? If you want an informed opinion, I can't give you one. If you want an educated guess, I bet the new one could be used by your older child without using the old one. Their method seems to be to start off really simply, and then ramp up the difficulty in a nice progression. For the younger ones, the original, now called DragonBox 5, is probably what you want. We really liked the original at the time, but blasted through it quickly. So this extension is just what we needed. Unfortunately this is not the right moment for a distraction in our schedule, as we have pressing matters to attend to. But soon we will try the new one out. Spy Car
Good point. My oldest is starting prealgebra, but the younger ones could still enjoy the lower level. It is with little ones, where they learn a good deal almost without realizing they are learning, where approaches like this one are most amazing. My son was well into the "game" before he said, "hey wait a minute is this a math program?" The progression of the first one (and have every reason to believe the second will be the same) is such that there is no need for all but the most basic instructions, and a parent need do nothing (but it is darn fun to watch what kids can pick up on though play in no time). There are elements to the learning in this app that approach "mind-blowing" I'm over-all a little skeptical about "technology" in education, including app based products. Most of what I've seen for math has been substitutes for "drill." Nothing wrong with that if it is fun for kids, but not a replacement for "teaching." DragonBox is different in providing (guided) discovery-based learning and playful exposure to math (algebra). Not many things like it. boscopup
Bill, I'll go ahead and get the first version. It's on Amazon app store, so I can buy once and use on both my tablet/phone AND my husband's tablets, since we share an Amazon account but have different Google accounts. The second version isn't on Amazon yet, but I'll bet it will be by time DS1 completes the first version. ;)

crazyforlatin
According to the company, the new app does reintroduce all concepts found in the first app and introduce more advanced concepts such as Factorization and Parentheses. I'm guessing the new app won't be an extensive review but enough to progress to the advanced topics. ETA: I do want to support this company for its innovating thinking, so if I had a younger child, I would still get both.
Spy Car
So despite saying now is not a good time, I mentioned that DragonBox 2 (12+) was released today, and my son said, can we get it pleeeeeaaaaasssseeee? What, do I have a heart of stone? :D We just went through the first three chapters (of 10). There is some review. It moves much faster. If children have not had exposure to any algebra and/or are younger, I'd advise DragonBox 5+ (aka DragonBox Plus). The new one ramps up much faster, and there is a lot a magic in the earlier edition for younger children. My feeling at this point is—don't rush it. Even I enjoyed doing the first DragonBox. At first, with this new one, we did get a little of the "this again?" feeling, as there is some "review" (although the content is not a direct repeat, and it moves faster), but now we are into having "new powers." I'm excited to move into uncharted territory. Bill

Spy Car
I just worked through the first 4 levels of DragonBox 12+ myself. It is definitely harder. The first two levels are an accelerated review of the skills in DragonBoxPlus/DragonBox5+. I am even more convinced today that I would start with DB5+ if there was any doubt about age/development. No need to jump/rush the discovery process to save the cost of the app. It would be false-economy IMO. DragonBox 5+ is too good to miss unless the user is too old. But even I enjoyed the original. Both these are pure genius. As I'm working though the new one I keep thinking how well the developers understand the learning process. Pure genius. I felt this way about the first one too. The way it challenges one to be logical, and builds the skills (powers) sequentially is so well thought through. I can hardly with to do the next 6 levels. So far I've felt a burst of pride when completing 3 problems in fewer steps than allowed ("better than possible"), mildly annoyed with myself for going over a few time (prompting me to re-do the problem and to find the mild efficiency, and a few times I fell into their trap, and really botched it (humbling). But learning from success and failure are all brilliantly build into this method. If you like "discovery" learning, and challenging logic problems, I can't recommend DragonBox highly enough. It is true that for the purchase price the app won't "last" as long as something like Plants vs Zombies. Monomaniacs could probably finish either version in a day or two. Against that downside the program itself is absolutely brilliant. We will see if I'm crying by the end of level 10 :D Bill

Alte Veste Academy
My DS7 has been playing Dragon Box 2. I told him it was for 12 and up and that I have another Dragon Box for him (the first DB is buried in a folder on the iPad, so he hadn't seen it, while DB2 was freshly downloaded and not filed yet). He just got irritated about that and kept playing. (That is my DS7 in a nutshell.) He got pretty far along and is having fun and seems to get the goal but...I was watching him play and I didn't really get it. So he would successfully do each level, even getting two stars in some of the farther along problems, while I was sitting next to him trying to pick out the algebra. He was/is just playing it like a game. ?? I honestly don't know if I should let him continue, which feels all kinds of wrong. I think today I will need to start from the beginning. These kid today... I think the advantage is that they are not looking for the hidden lesson (while I am only looking for the hidden lesson). But is that a disadvantage too? I don't know. crazyforlatin
I was going to post a change of mind last night, but it was late. I watched DD play Chapter 2 and part of Chapter 3. I love the way the app guides the child, but this is definitely another level of mathematical thinking. There is only a quick introduction, nothing like the slow progression of the first app. I had to have DD redo a couple of times to make sure she was within the number of moves, to even tell her to keep these moves in mind since she is supposed to have a similar problem in AOPS Pre-A today. I now highly recommend the first app, for the reasons Bill stated above. And really, what's $5 if your child becomes a math lover :). Spy Car
*I* am having trouble with DB12+ Chapter 5 Problem 7. I am getting awarded "two moves" for one of my allowed "7" moves (which seems like a "bug") but even subtracting one from the score of "nine" puts me one over. This is the first one where I'm stumped. If one of you could get your children to figure it out, and can expain how, this old man would appreciate it :D Bill ETA: finally figured it out, but this one blew a few brain cells for me :p
anabelneri
ETA: finally figured it out, but this one blew a few brain cells for me :p There have been a couple like that for me. The little lightbulb tool has been helpful. I feel like it's been a part of my learning process... some things I've learned from choosing that have been unexpected "new powers" (at least that's my feeling). Plugging along, entering chapter 6... :)
Kuovonne
If you get really stuck, you can press the restart button in the to right corner and a hints lightbulb button will appear. When you are docked 2 moves for what feels like 1 move, I don't think it is a bug. I think that is to keep the move count in sync. You're really doing two moves in one swipe. For example, in one swipe you can both move a fish to the other side and combine it with an existing fish on the other side, which is two moves. There are some things that I like about DragonBox 2, and some things I don't. In some ways, I think that it makes things too complicated. For example, if you have half a fish plus half a fish, it takes a bunch of steps to turn it into one whole fish. (It might not be a fish in the actual game, but you get the idea.) FYI, there is an issue in chapter 10, level 7 that can cause some surprising results. Some of you might have fun finding it and explaining why the unexpected happens. I reported it and they are looking into it. I hope itwill be changed to remove the issue in the next release.

LNC
I have a 12yo and 14yo, but I think I'll get both anyway. I never pay for apps, but maybe the 5+ version will build confidence b4 starting 12+.
Spy Car
I finished the "A" part of DragonBox 12+ last week. It is very challenging. While I racked up a lot of "better than possible" rounds for using fewer than permissible moves, there were quite a few times when I had to repeat "correct" solutions to get the 3 stars for staying under the permissible moves. And I still have a few left that are two star problems (solved, but over the permissible number of moves). This is not "easy." However, it is great fun and a real test of logical thinking. The creators of this game have, once again, delivered something really special. If you like discovery based learning and like a cognitive/logical thinking challenge, then this app is for you. For those wondering DragonBox 12+ does not replace DragonBox 5+ (aka DragonBox Plus). Although it is true that there is an accelerated coverage of skills in the first levels of DB12+ that are an overlap (of sorts) with DB12+ the pace, depth, and challenge of these two apps is quite different. DB5+ is an outstanding introduction to basic algebra. The pace is wonderful and developmentally appropriate for elementary school aged kids. DB12+ is accelerated, and gets hard around Chapter 5. DB12+ is geared towards Middle School (and up) learners. It took thought and attention for me to work through "the game" portion of the app (Side A) and I still have the "practice" portion (Side B ) to go. Where I could whip through DB5+ in short order, DB12+ takes time. My son (late 8) is pretty strong in the sort of thinking skills required in DB. So far he is about mid-way through Chapter 4. To this point the app is relatively "easy," and he has had no problems. However, the screw is about to turn. I honestly do not know how he will do with the challenges facing him in Chapter 5 (and beyond). I am fascinated to find out. If parents are in doubt about which to get, I would say error on the side of starting with DB5+. It really is a delightful introduction to the subject and the metaphors of "the game." At worst an older student (or parent) moves though DB5+ quickly. But that will still be a fun and worthwhile experience. I can't stress enough how different DragonBox is for most "math apps." Apps that serve as a substitute for "drill" are nice to have, and I appreciate ones that have a "hook" that gets children interested. But these are nothing compared to the sort of learning DragonBox encourages. DB really builds logical thinking in a way that encourages exploration (and includes learning through "failure"). I can not recommend these apps (both versions) highly enough! 5+ Stars from me. Bill
Eagle
I tried out DragonBox 5+ this weekend due to advice from this thread and I cannot thank everyone enough for this recommendation. Ds (5) LOVES this app. He spent a lot of time this weekend playing it or asking to play it. Even when the app switched to using math notation in chapter 4 ds didn't figure out that he was doing anything beyond simply playing a game. It is amazing to watch a 5yo think his way through algebra. He had never seen negative numbers before, so he now refers to them as "night numbers" thanks to dragonbox. We got a huge kick out of hearing him solve equations: "Match the day and night dragons, clean up, this dragon goes on the bottom... everywhere. Clean up! This dragon goes on the top... everywhere. Clean up, clean up, clean up. The box is by itself!" It's especially fun when the pictures are replaced with letters and he still refers to X as "the box". We need more apps like this! Eagle
Ds finished all 5 chapters in DragonBox 5+ this morning. It then opened up a bonus set of 5 chapters which appear to be the same as the first 5 except using letters and numbers instead of pictures. It is so awesome to see ds just plow through these bonus levels. When we finish the bonus chapters is there anything else? I would love a sandbox that lets us create and solve our own equations. I am guessing the 5+ version doesn't have this. Does the 12+ app have a sandbox? If so, do you need to complete all the levels to open it or is it available right away? Not a "sandbox" but DB12+ has two "sides." Side A is the regular game with symbols. When you finish Side A a new side, Side B, opens up. In Side B the symbols are replaced with numbers and letters (like straight algebra equations). I've only scratched the surface of Side B. I found an issue with Chapter 10, level 7, but it was side A. That problem involves division by zero and it is possible to end up with 5=4. ETA: (4(x + 2) + 3(x + (-1))) divide by (x+(-1))(x + 2) = 0 so numerator is zero. than solve as usual. took me 19 steps I find the solution in the hint to be overly complicated. Arcadia's way is much simpler. To tell the app that the numerator is zero, I put both parts of the denominator in a crate, and then multiplied both sides.
