Chris in VA
I know I read it somewhere, prob NT, in one of the letters (not in a Gospel) or maybe Revelation but I just can't find it. It *might* be in Psalms, or one of the major prophets, but I just don't know. It infers that those who perished in the Flood heard the gospel, or had a chance for salvation after the Flood. I've looked under deluge, flood, gospel, and salvation but can't find it. (Haven't used a really good concordance, just what's in my bible.) Argghh! I think I underlined it, but I have several bibles and can't find it! Can you help?
theYoungerMrsWarde
Was it when the writer was listing the fathers of the church and talked about how they lived by faith and therefore were considered saved?
Shamzanne
Hebrews 11:7? It's not a perfect fit but this is the only one I can think of.
Celia
The one that comes to mind for me is in 2 Peter, where's we're told Noah is preaching. Here it is....2 Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
Carol in Cal.
I Peter 3:18-22 reminds me of your reference, although it doesn't say that the people in Noah's time were saved, but rather than God held off the Flood so that they would have an opportunity to turn to Him. Here is the ESV, and the KJV follows: For Christ also suffered[b] once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which[c] he went andproclaimed[d] to the spirits in prison, 20 because[e] they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. 18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. MercyA
Yep, I think Celia (ETA: and Carol!) called it: For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. 1 Peter 3:18-
Chris in VA
I think that's the one--thanks so much-- Also found a resource online, which gives several interpretations of the verse, so I think that's the one I'm thinking of. Thanks so much!
