Monarch Room
I have a 4th grader this year doing R&S 3. I started him there because it was our first year home from PS, and I wasn't sure what had been covered up until 3rd grade. He has really improved with basic grammar by using R&S 3 this year, but I am wondering if I should just skip him ahead to level 5 next year for 5th. He has handled level 3 with ease. We use HOD, and R&S 5 and 6 are scheduled over 4 years rather than using one level per year. Would it be inadvisable to skip R&S 4 and go into level 5? Would I be missing something really important in level 4? Thank you for your help :)
Garga
Huh. I was wondering if I could skip R&S 5 and go straight to 6. I hope someone answers!
Tess in the Burbs
You could skip 4. They each build a little more. I am doing 4 and 5 this year with my kids. Level 5 is more detailed and after doing 3 wouldn't be too hard. It just has more in depth than level 3. Terminology is more direct and goes into more details. boscopup
I'd skip 4. You can jump in at grade level through level 5. The grade 4 and 5 books aren't that different (I'm using 4 now and just received 5 last week and looked through it - haven't used it yet). Bocky
I jumped into R&S 5 with my 5th grader this year. It has gone very well. It is a really thorough course; totally open and go for me and since it reviewed everything she has had no problems with the level of the work in spite of having next to no grammar background. I think you can skip 4.

It's nice to hear from someone who has worked through both levels. Thank you for sharing your experience :) I'd skip 4. You can jump in at grade level through level 5. I have both levels, and it's hard for me to see the major differences. It just seems like 5 is a more in depth version of the previous levels. I jumped into R&S 5 with my 5th grader this year. SilverMoon
An average 5th grade kid could jump right into the series at the 5 book. Go for it. :001_smile: ( I have a DC in the 4 book now, and my older two DC have used the 5 book.)
Monarch Room
Thank you SilverMoon :) I always pay attention to your R&S posts. I will go ahead and do level 5. I believe my rising 5th grader is capable of making the leap. Thank you all for giving me the confidence to do so!
Mallory
We did FLL 3 when the boys were in 3rd and 4th and then skipped to R&S 6 when they were in 5th and 6th (and took two years with it- so we are just finishing it now when they are in 6th and 7th). I thought it was just fine. We will be doing R&S 7 or 8 next year (and probably taking two years for it).
mom31257
I have a different question. Ds started R&S 4 in January. I plan on finishing it next year. Could I skip 5 and go straight to 6 and use it over that year and a half? I don't want to waste time on doing 5 if it's basically a repeat of 4. The content of all the books is basically the same, but the difficulty increases drastically between 5 and 6. You won't notice it much if you have been through 5, but you will notice it hugely if you skip it!

I plan to make a leap in difficulty in a couple of other subjects during middle school/logic stage, so maybe I need to space all of it out. This is what I always hear, but we did 6 having done FLL3 as our only formal grammar study three years earlier, and it was just fine. I don't think it really matters, and I really liked doing 6 over two years. But you could also do 5 over two years and skip 6 and be at the same place. Honestly, if you get through 7th or 8th grade you have had more than most high school texts.
