Porcelain over time with get little cracks from the clothes/zippers/buttons rubbing/banging against it and rust.

Top load HE loads from the top and has no agitator. They can hold bulky stuff as they are bigger. Samsung is the best currently for this style. They have metal hinges that hold the washer basket to the machine. The other brands are plastic and having issues with failure. Look on youtube for videos of it.

Front load HE loads from the front. I have an LG and love it.

Huh, I've never seen a porcelain drum. I've seen stainless or plastic.

I have a front loader. I don't know how it compares to a HE top loader. I find I use much less soap and water and it is a lot gentler on the clothes compared with a traditional top loader.

Front and Top load HE are the same really. They use the same soap and water. It is more of what fits your needs. Of course their are those who insist one cleans better than the other. I have used both and my clothes came out the same. Next washer, I will go with a Top load HE as we are having more wash and bigger blankets.

Make sure the front load HE has a filter door on the machine. Otherwise, the cheaper machines tend not too and you have to call the repairman when it has a filter code. It is not a easy to get to part.

We have an HE toploader because it was cheaper and we wanted to avoid possible mold issues. The toploader doesn't have to close with a gasket like the front loader to keep water in. Our HE toploader top is just like a regular toploader top so there is plenty of airflow when the door is closed.

We have an LG HE front loader. We have had mold issues. You can't leave clothes in the washer for any length of time. They will smell musty. Also, you need to leave the door open when not using. If you can take the clothes out quickly (and not forget like I do!), then it is o.k. Also, I have read that you shouldn't use too much detergent, or any liquid fabric softener, because it can build up on the outside of the tub.

I don't have mold issues with mine. I leave the door open and wipe it down once a day. I use fabric softener and my washer is still going strong but we only use certain environmentally friendly products.

I leave the door of our Whirlpool front loader open and use vinegar in the cycle frequently we haven't had any mold issues. We have had other major issues resulting in about 6 service calls and replacing both electronic panels. The problem STILL isn't resolved and I don't have a washer I can count on.

FYI--the front loaders aren't designed to handle small loads and I'm not able to wash 1-2 garments or a small fleece blanket without loading up other things along with it.

For what it's worth, all of the washer repairmen who've been through say they'd never own a front loader.

SIL owned a Whirlpool FL and a Whirlpool dishwasher. Said they were the worst machines she has ever owned. I know the washer had chronic electrical issues.

Some front loaders are able to handle small loads and they have a setting for it.

We have a top-loading HE washer with no agitator. My main issues are 1) the lid locks and it takes forever and a day for it to unlock to add the sock you missed and 2) you can't fill it up and soak anything-it drains after a few minutes. Bummer because I like to soak my white duvet cover in oxyclean and now I have to do it in the tub.

Huh. I've never had a mold issue. My front loader is 9 years old.

And, as Wendy mentioned, I'm short and appreciate not cracking ribs trying to get stuff out of the bottom. As for soaking, I just turn it on, let it start its tumbling when it has finished adding water, and then turn it off after a few minutes. If I want things submerged (like socks. Why are my children's socks disgusting?) I use a bucket.

I have a kenmore elite top loading he washer. I needed the large capacity because of my four kids. I do have to stand on my tip toes to reach the bottom. I have been quite pleased with its washing capabilities. It spins the clothes nearly dry and that reduces dry time. It also has a soak feature that I love!
