Parrothead
A promising looking recipe is found on line. It has reviews and photos. But when someone one tried to make it at home it looks nothing like the photos, tastes like carp (well, that is an insult to carp everywhere), and ruins the meal. So we are having mashed potatoes and cole slaw for dinner tonight. The cats even turned their noses up at it.

OrganicAnn
I find the key is to really think about a recipe when you initially find it. Often you can spot that there will be some issue if you really think about the combination of ingredients. I've tried to teach this to my DH especially after the Beet, feta cheese, and cilantro salad that he made a BIG batch of.
Ravin
When in doubt, I run recipes by my (former chef) husband, or stick with the many published cookbooks in the house.
Chocolate Rose
Yep, that's the worst! And, a waste of ingredients. What was the recipe you tried? I really try to stick with recipes that are supposedly "tried and true". But, because of my diet, I'm trying a lot of recipes from various blogs. So far, I haven't had many duds. (knock on wood). Seasider
The disappointing part is that there were reviews. I am always careful to read the reviews and especially all the "this is what I did differently" comments My sis has a policy of not using an online recipe unless it's rated 5 stars. She says every dish out there has a five star version of its recipe, no sense in staring with a three star and hoping it will be wonderful. Forget-Me-Not
I hate that too. I've gotten pretty picky about my online recipe sources for that reason :)

It was some random blog. From now on I'm sticking to cooking websites like Epicurious and cooks illustrated.
