Crimson Wife
I've tried to search for it but couldn't find the link to the online version of Dolciani Pre-Algebra. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
wapiti
I don't think there is an on-line version ( ), unless you're just looking for the link for the hard copy at Amazon.
Crimson Wife
I could've sworn that someone posted a link to it in one of the various pre-a threads. Stupidly, I didn't bookmark it then and now I can't find it.
stripe
Is it this? nrocmath.org for algebra 1 I found an old thread where someone said it was based on Dolciani but I have no idea about anything else
wapiti
There's the open library http://openlibrary.o...olciani algebra but it doesn't have an on-line copy of the prealgebra as far as I can see. FWIW, I have the 1970/1973, 1981 and 1985/1988 versions (I know I'm a little nuts). If there's something you wanted to see from one of them, like the TOC or the format, let me know. A long time ago I posted pics from the 1988 Prealgebra An Accelerated Course but I can't find the thread. Eta, I found the post with the samples here
dereksurfs
Yes, I think you are referring to the thread where we discussed the various Algebra 1 Dolciani versions. Some are available at Open Library, but not Pre-A. I did pick up a used copy very cheaply. IMO its worth having just as a reference at the very least. Crimson Wife
My DD is looking like she needs more work on pre-algebra before moving on from Singapore DM7. I just had her do the year-end review from PM 6B IP and she bombed it (only 54% correct). I am considering having her work through the "c" level problems in Dolciani pre-a and maybe re-do the harder CWP from 5 and 6 since it has been a bit since she completed those. I was hoping to avoid having to purchase the Dolciani book.

It will take things up a notch for her and definitely keep her on her toes in preparation for Algebra 1: http://homeschoolmathonline.com/ Since you have two younger ones you may find the Dolciani text good to have around. I'm pretty sure you can find it under $10. I've seen them go for as little as $2 used: http://www.alibris.c...ni/book/5296350

I had missed that thread. I really like the Dolciani Pre-A samples. It looks very similar to the DM 1A and 1B that I have, although, imo, the DM books are little bit more child-friendly. Is the Dolciani Pre-A 1981 version similar to the 1988 version? I have bought the 1981 book on Amazon, but it will be a few months before I will get it in my hands. Haiku
I recently bought a used copy of Dolciani Pre-A from Amazon. It was $8 including shipping. Worth. Every. Penny. Tara

It doesn't list Dolciani, but the cover is the same so I was wondering. http://www.amazon.co...iani prealgebra Thanks! Nicole
TN Mama
I wondered if this one was good, too. It lists Dolciani, but the cover is different. :) http://www.amazon.com/Pre-algebra-wEdition-Wooton-William-Dolciani/dp/0395246466/ref=sr_1_10?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1366811533&sr=1-10&

It lists Dolciani, but the cover is different. :) http://www.amazon.co....811533&sr=1-10 Hm, At first I thought that is a 'different' Dolciani because it mentions Beck Dolciani. But then I saw Mary P. at the beginning. So I'm not sure. For the low cost of her used books I wouldn't experiment too much but rather go with the well known version entitled 'Pre-Algebra An Accelerated Course.' Of course if they are only a few dollars then I guess it wouldn't be that much of a loss either way. As far as the different years of that text I'm not sure if there is much of a difference. I'm pretty sure mine is the 1985 version.
SilverMoon
Eta, I found the post with the samples here I wondered if this one was good, too. It lists Dolciani, but the cover is different. :) http://www.amazon.co....811533&sr=1-10 I have the green book. The lessons don't line up with those pictures, but the style is the same. 9-2 in the pictures is equations in two variables; 9-2 in mine is mixed decimal numerals. I have to go to 16-2 for equations in two variables, but the instructions read nearly identically to that sample.
wapiti
Thank you for reposting the link to your samples. I had missed that thread. I really like the Dolciani Pre-A samples. I have bought the 1981 book on Amazon, but it will be a few months before I will get it in my hands. It turns out that what I had thought was 1981 is actually 1977. (FWIW, the copyright also mentions that the book takes material from Modern Structure and Method books 1 and 2 from 1975, 1972). I only bought it because I wondered what text I had used when I had prealgebra around 1980; unfortunately, I will never know what I used because I can't remember. Student text 0395246466 TE 0395246474 The 1977 book, "Prealgebra, New Edition" with the green cover, starts off with a chapter on sets. This is absent from the 1988 (1988 is a reprint of 1985, I believe). IMO it is an in-between step from the 1970/1973 Modern School Mathematics Pre-algebra, which is much closer to New Math and both starts with set theory and has more set theory sprinkled throughout. Solving equations is dealt with closer to the end. By the mid-80s, the math looks more traditional and set theory is gone. The TOC of the mid-80s book more closely resembles newer prealgebra text TOCs. In the 1988, solving equations appears earlier (ch 4); this is not surprising as its title notes that it's an accelerated course. The terminology is also a little different, which makes comparing the TOCs tricky without looking through the actual chapters. The layout of the 1977 book is fine - again, something in between my 1973 and my 1988 - definitely more user-friendly than the 1973, but not as user-friendly as the 1988. The paper is matte and yellowed like my 1973. In contrast, the 1988 paper is white and glossy - obviously there's an age difference but the texture is also totally different. Y'all are making me want to take my kids through the set theory chapters as summer math :tongue_smilie: . I'm sure they'd be delighted
Crimson Wife
So if I want something to review the topics that DD has covered in Singapore DM 7 and Horizons Pre-Algebra but hasn't quite mastered to my satisfaction, I want one of the Dolciani books with a copyright in the mid-80's? I'm not worried about set theory but rather the skills that are going to come up again in later math courses. I had her take one of the Horizons Pre-A exams today and while she did better than on the 6B IP review, I'm still concerned about the gaps it showed in her understanding. I don't want her moving on to higher level math unless she is totally rock-solid on pre-algebra.
wapiti
Yes - I would get 1985 or 1988 (sometimes it's listed as 1987 but in any case, it is a reprint of 1985). There are chapter review execises that might be helpful. Answers to odds are in the back for everything but the chapter tests. No TM meeded - just get the cheapest copy of the text. I wonder if it might be too easy coming from DM, but I haven't seen DM. You could possibly use Alcumus instead or in addition if you find Dolciani too straightforward.
