SarahW
In college I was a part of a group that watched classic/seminal/important films and then discussed them. A few of the films we watched were Citizen Kane, Life is Beautiful, Twelve Angry Men, and Nosferatu. So let's brainstorm. 75 years from now what films will some college kids want to watch from the past decade or so? Many of the movies my group watched weren't box office hits, or even very popular at first. So I think most of the "big" movies of the past few years will fall to the wayside. What movies will stand the test of time, and be indicative of the state of our society? I'll start :) District 9 (2009)

sparrow
What an interesting question! I know I'll be thinking about this into the evening, but the first movie that came to mind was V for Vendetta.
Tina
And for some reason, Gran Torino came to mind.
OrganicAnn
I think the Lord of the Rings trilogy might - depending on whether there is a remake in the next 75 years.
Chris in VA
I can think of some foreign films. I don't know when those were made, so I won't list. Mostly I'm thinking of the artistic aspects of film, not the total package, like CK was. (BTW, if you have never seen the commentary by Roger Ebert, is is AWESOME. First watch the movie, then watch it another time with the commentary--so instructive, so interesting, so...GOOD!) I think Days of Heaven will be watched--it is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. We watched a good deal of it without the sound the first time ds showed it to me; as soon as the soundtrack came on, I didn't like it as much...lol! I also think Tree of Life will stand the test of time and grow on people. I really like Malik's films. I hope people will realize just how good Beasts of the Southern Wild was, too. ETA--Oops, I see I misinterpreted your questions. Well, Beasts still stands, but the others are historical pics, for the most part.
SarahW
Ooh, great ideas. Some I haven't seen, and some I think I meant to see, and never did. Maybe I should. I think historical pics can be "valid" here. My college group watched the original silent Joan of Arc. We also watched The Birth of a Nation (about which I will say nothing other than it was utterly boring until it unfortunately was not). I think the Elizabeth movies are quite indicative of our own time (hello postmodernism). Sometimes a story set in the past casts our own society in relief. A bit older than a decade now, I guess, but who thinks The Matrix will come back around in the future?
TXBeth
Slight rabbit trail... Why, oh WHY is Citizen Kane considered such a great movie? It is so boring! Is it significant for some other reason?

SarahW
Slight rabbit trail... Why, oh WHY is Citizen Kane considered such a great movie? It is so boring! Is it significant for some other reason? I agree about it being boring! I think it's considered a great because of the cinematography It was groundbreaking camera work, or something. But now the techniques used are just the standard, so we today don't notice it. But I think the general plot of a man who tries to gain the whole world, only to die in regret over something seemingly inconsequential, was very interesting. I just never like the story-in-a-story storylines, they nearly always drag.

Chris in VA
Slight rabbit trail... Why, oh WHY is Citizen Kane considered such a great movie? It is so boring! Is it significant for some other reason? Here is a masterful review of Citizen Kane--by the same Roger Ebert as I mentioned above. I am learning to look at film in a totally different way thru the tutoring of my son. How funny to me--the boy I homeschooled is becoming the man who is schooling me! I just adore watching movies with him, as he always points out why things are significant--"Now, watch how this scene is lit," or, "See the way the camera moves? It's telling you something..." Film analysis, if that's the right term, opens up film the way literary analysis opens up literature--absolutely fascinating to me, and so helps me appreciate the depth of both the art of fim making and the art of the stories of the films. I love it, because the medium mixes sound, image, story, and often social commentary, philosophy, religious pondering, etc--so RICH! Oops--now back to your regular programming...lol! KungFuPanda
I had an artsy film kid tell me the other day that it was Pulp Fiction. I'm still trying to get my brain around that one.
