Kissy Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 My son is an advanced reader but it still working on getting his writing better and I know MP does a bit of writing in their work. So my questions is for a young 2nd grader who has already completed his phonics curriculum to the end and is using All About Spellling which helps his reading would you use the 2nd grade literature guides or back up and use the Storytime Treasures & More Storytime Treasures as his second grade reading? I think he would find the Storytime Treasures to be more fun and engaging but I worry that it is not enough for second grade but I also worry that the second grade set is too much for second grade. I have also considered VP More Favorites. Any help? Quote
Kissy Posted April 21, 2013 Author Posted April 21, 2013 has anyone used these? Did you use them on level or are they advanced? Quote
mmpmelmack Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Do you have one of the guides to look at? I am using MP 2nd grade next year with my young 2nd grader, however he is easily reading at all the books reading level. If he was not easily reading at this level I would have chosen ST/MST. I would also look at your goal for the guides. My goal is teaching DS to read carefully, and to look at more then just the story. He has also already read 3 of the books on his own, and all of the books have been used as read alouds. So he is familiar with the stories. Quote
alisoncooks Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 We're using MP's ST/MST next year for my soon-to-be 2nd grader. She's not a strong reader, so we'll be taking it slowly and adding some phonics to it. We're adding in a separate spelling program. (I'm still undecided to what extent we'll add in more grammar and more writing....we'll probably start light -- with nothing extra -- and see how it goes.) Quote
amyrjoy Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 We used the storytime treasures in first grade, but I didn't have my son do ALL the writing..it was a bit too much...for a plan to use it instead for second? PERFECT! He liked those books and so did I! :) Quote
