happycc Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I have a child who is just struggling with math. Painful struggle. We are using Education Unboxed, Thinking Blocks, Singapore, Cams/STams, Study Island, Dreambox and it is all just painful, slow and lots of work. I am considering using both Singapore and CLE with her. CLE for the spiral review she needs with the flashcards but continue with Singapore concepts all with the above. I looked at Math Mammoth and that would be out of the question for her. Quote
LaraH Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 We use CLE exclusively - I have used Singapore in the past and I think it would be a lot to do both in my opinion. What about supplementing with lots of games, on line stuff if she likes that, etc. Rainbow Resource has lots of math games, some of them just simple things like dice - more fun than flashcards! My son loves the games. Quote
happycc Posted April 18, 2013 Author Posted April 18, 2013 I would love to do more games. But it is difficult with a preschooler and newborn. I need to wait just a bit more before going back to games again. We do a little here and there but not nearly as much as I would like. I am posting a flier up to a college asking for one of their student clubs to see if they would be willing to do a math and science club for homeschoolers. Once this is started maybe we can get them to do some math games. Quote
LaraH Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 What about living math books and/or DVDs? There was a recent post about great math books and we love the series by Stuart Murphy. My son has learned all his math concepts that way before we even get to them in the curriculum. Sonlight has a great series of math DVDs that might also be nice to free up some of your time! Quote
boscopup Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Honestly, I'd just do CLE and skip the Singapore in your case (and I'm a die-hard Singapore lover). Sometimes less is more. You're throwing everything but the kitchen sink at her. Pick one program, use manipulatives of her choice with it, and just be consistent. Doing more and more math may not help, ya know? Quote

If it's a painful struggle, I'd give her less, not more. CLE has worked extremely well here and has actually turned Rebecca from a struggling math student to a very competent one. Quote
lorisuewho Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Another vote for just doing CLE right now. Quote
Spy Car Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 A vote for using Singapore and just using a supplemental Singapore practice book. Bill Quote
NASDAQ Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 If you don't have the time to do math games, I don't think it would be realistic to be running essentially two complete math curricula at the same time. Singapore can be jiggled quite a bit to make sure that the concepts 'stick,' as it were. Spiral back to practice problems and print out supplemental problems from http://math-aids.com/, that sort of thing. Quote
kiwik Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 You are using 6 different programmes with a child who is struggling? Which one suits her best? Do it by itself for a while then see whether you want to add a supplement. Quote
Five More Minutes Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Another vote for simplifying a lot. I don't have experience with CLE, so can't comment. I do have experience in using the different Singapore books a slightly different levels to provide a continuous review. We do the HIG / text / workbook on-level, the CWP a couple of months behind, and the IP a half-level back. This way concepts are continually being reinforced, which I think is the idea behind a spiral program? Quote
I.Dup. Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 I agree with the others about just doing CLE. You are trying to do way too much math, and doing Singapore plus CLE would crush my dd. She didn't retain anything in the year I had her in Singapore, now that she is only doing CLE she is doing much better. Quote
