Mandylubug Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 So, I am thankful my son likes to read and has found a book series he loves. As a family, we always sit and read quietly. However, lately as my oldest reads he wants to retell me EVERYTHING as he reads it. I just want to read my book without interruption. How can I encourage him to stop without discouraging him from reading? Quote
5LittleMonkeys Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Can you ask him to hold off telling you until the end of every other chapter, or every three or four chapters? This would probably help him be more concise...only relaying the most important, or most interesting details. Quote
Mandylubug Posted April 18, 2013 Author Posted April 18, 2013 I haven't given him exact times when he can. So that is a good idea. Every other chapter would be good. He is a sweet kid and really does just want to discuss it. I bet he would enjoy a book club. Quote
rjand6more Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 We are going through this with dd(age 10) right now. Ugh. It takes her longer to retell than read it in the first place! I love that she loves to read. Dh gives me the "help me" look when she corners him or rides with him to piano lesson. :) What series is he excited about? Aside from school books(Ali and the Golden Eagle-it is hilarious according to dd) she is loving The Warriors series, The NERDS series, The Sisters Grimm series, Kingdom Keepers series, and Pandora series. She is on a first name basis with all the librarians. :) Quote
Mandylubug Posted April 18, 2013 Author Posted April 18, 2013 He is reading The Lightening Thief series by Rick Riordan (I think that is how his name is spelled). He wants to read The Warrior series next. He just finished The Hobbit and talked my ears off the entire week with that one, too. Haha Quote

SFM Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 A side note my son read all of The Warrior series and I could tell you precisely what happened, he is really into that series. I would recommend getting it. I think he just likes it so much he wants to tell us EVERYTHING that happened. We playfully name our family members after attributes of the cats....we're THAT family. :) Quote

We browsed them at barnes and noble but haven't purchased yet. Quote
SFM Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 My son says, "You don't have to read them in order because each book contains a prologue but I think it's best to read them in order because you will know more." :) HTH! He's my resident Warrior expert. He tried Seekers and Survivors (Survivors are dogs and Seekers are about bears) and so far he loves Warriors and he is re-reading some of them as well as their super novels. Obsessed much? ;) I need to find something else he likes. Quote
