Switching math !

:smash: I have an announcement ....

I am switching DS1 from Horizons to Saxon for next year. I already ordered the stuff so don't try to talk me out of it ;) I loved how well Horizons 3 worked for him, and Horizons K and 1 just rock for DS2, but since DS1 moved into the Horizons 4, I do not like it...4 is quite different from 3 and I find myself crossing out and skipping so much stuff. I was wanting to find something spiral that goes all they way into high school math anyway, so it's a good time to switch.

Okay, I feel better now. Just felt I should put that out there for the world ! :tongue_smilie:

I wanted to hate Saxon. I had worked with it when I was teaching and found it good in a institutional setting but wanted a mastery based program. I wanted.........unicorns, rainbows, and balloons. :p

Imagine my dismay when Saxon turned out to be exactly what Punk needed. Don't get me wrong, we have supplemented the mess out of it with Miquon, Beast, life of Fred and all manner of math based games, but Saxon has been the core and he has thrived with it.

We just, as in 20 minutes ago, finished up Saxon Math 1. We're going to do a quick run through a Math Made Easy workbook while we finish up OPGTR, but I've already got our Saxon Math 2 stuff on the shelf and ready to go.

I like Saxon. We're going to have Math Fun Fridays this year with living math books and games and Life of Fred, but Saxon is our math core. :patriot:

Can you tell me what a "living Math" book is?

Here's a website. We use her free booklists extensively. I've toyed with trying a lesson. A living math book is the same as any living book. (that's A CM term). It basically means reading a book about math or a math topic. It's a great supplement to any math program. It turns math into literature as well and gives a nice break from the text and workbook and pencil and paper math.

Read a biography about a famous mathematician? That's a "living" book as opposed to a textbook or workbook.

it's math concepts incorporated into story form. Here is a popular series...http://www.amazon.co...=sir cumference

:)

Yup! We have a bunch of Sir Cumference books, some Multiplying Menace, lots of Math Adventures, some Math Counts concepts books, etc. We already have Uno and Rush Hour Jr. I'm going to designate every Amazon gift card and rewards point for the next few months to accumulating more games. I've got Smath, Sum Swamp, and 4-Way Countdown on the wish list so far.
