Younger child surpassing an older one

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Kids are different. My middle son far surpassed my daughter in math and science. He is 2 1/2 years younger than her and overtook her when he was in about 4th or 5th grade. It never was upsetting to my daughter probably because I never made it an issue. I've always told the kids that we all have gifts in different areas and left it at that.

My younger son did Algebra 1 at 10 and calculus at 15. His older brother slickly managed to somehow graduate college without ever finishing Algebra 1. My boys had very different skills. One did math, Greek and Latin. The other was socially precocious and an artist. we used the word "different" a lot, and talked about how "different" wasn't better or worse; it was just different.

We have the same situation here... DS (9) can "sit in" on his sister's science, math & grammar classes (7th grade) and HELP HER with her work. LOL! In the beginning, I got the occasional eye roll from my daughter, but she understands he's just programmed that way :)

DD's strengths are by far the arts -- creative writing, music, painting. They've just come to understand each others differences and are beginning to appreciate them.

Our job as parents -- and teachers -- is to help our children grow into the best all-around person they can become. No two kiddos are going to be (or learn) alike. Enjoy discovering their unique abilities and have fun helping them develop them!

Happy Homeschooling :)

We have the same situation with Ds11 and Ds10, but they're only 14 months apart. When they were younger, we made a point of keeping them in separate math programs and using ungraded materials, but it really hasn't been as big of an issue as we thought it would. My kids are well aware of each others' weaknesses, so they don't seem bothered by each others' strengths.

dd13 has passed ds15 in most subjects. for a while they were at level, and I had them doing the same things, often together. A dd started passing ds I changed some of the curriculum. DS really could not handle Saxon. so he is doing a standard Australian math book. this is working much better for him, and has the side benefit that it is less obvious that he is behind his younger sister.
