CatholicMom
I might give SL's LA one more go since it comes with the Core IG anyway. However, I'm still unclear on what it covers. Writing? Grammar? Comprehension? Is Spelling scheduled into the new LA?? I see that Wordly Wise is an option resource, but for some reason I'm not understanding what is covered with the LA that is already in the IG. I also don't see any obvious LA books like a Grammar book or something pictured with the "Included Items" list. So is the entirety of the LA included in the IG... without the use of any LA-specific books? Trying to figure out what I would want to add on top of the already-provided LA which is difficult b/c I don't get what programs ARE included in the LA schedule. Hope that makes sense. Anybody know?? boscopup
Which Core are you doing? I have Core E, and it covers grammar and writing, plus some occasional literary analysis. I gave a brief review in post #3 of this thread. I personally will be using separate grammar and writing programs. Sonlight really needs to remove LA from the IG again. It makes absolutely no sense to have it tied to a core level.
CatholicMom
I will be doing Core D. I think my confusion is in the lack of LA books/programs that SL uses. I was thinking they'd incorporate other LA programs into the "SL LA" but now I'm thinking not? Apparently all SL LA entails is the instructions in the IG and the activity sheets? *shrug* All "other" LA programs they sell seem to be supplementary, except Sequential Spelling which is under required resource? Just trying to get it straight.

All of the grammar and writing instruction is in there (it's just limited and all over the place and sometimes insane :tongue_smilie:). They do not use any other curriculum, except at some point they expect that you would do a year of Grammar Ace, I think. And yes, spelling is not in the LA, so they schedule Sequential Spelling. Feel free to choose something else. They don't include notes or anything. It's just "Do page xyz". If you get the 3 week sample, you'll be able to see the first 3 weeks of the IG including the LA portion. I didn't do LA with Core D (I used an older core), so I haven't seen that, but I'm guessing it's probably similar to the Core E LA that I reviewed in the thread I linked to. mschickie
The new LA seems to have more of the mechanics section in the program. I love the way it is laid out for the early grades. I used it for Cores A-D. Last year for Core D I did add in Easy Grammar and this year for Core E I only used sections of the LA. This year we started IEW because I wanted a little of structure for dd on how to write. I love the variety of assignments in dd and they work well in the upper grades for natural writers. I think you really need to just look at it and see if it would work for your child.
CatholicMom
Thanks. Maybe I will plan on doing the LA since I'll receive it anyway, and also try Grammar Ace. If the LA is not what I bargained for I can still fall back on Grammar Ace. I assume doing both isn't too much for one year (in addition to spelling). mschickie
It shouldn't be too much at all. I know lots of folks who have done that.
