kfeusse
I am assuming that the hand doctor that we see Tuesday will tell us that her finger will need to be kept straight by a splint or a cast (since we were told it is broken)....but if they say splint, can I ask, should I ask, would it be bad to ask them to put it in a cast....so she can play and do normal things without the fear of rehurting it? She has it wrapped with a splint now and her hand is developing blisters from the wrap and is very uncomfortable, but I was told NOT to mess with the wrap until the specialist sees her...so I haven't. They splinted the pinky and then also buddy taped it to the ring finger for extra stability...I have cut away small pieces of the tape that were rubbing her hand wrongly...we are just trying to make it to Tuesday. opinions??? Mommy22alyns
I don't think it could hurt to ask.
Jennifer in MI
And, being that summer is coming, ask about a Gortex cast so she can swim. (Obviously, I think you should ask!)
kfeusse
And, being that summer is coming, ask about a Gortex cast so she can swim. (Obviously, I think you should ask!) I have NEVER even heard of such a thing....now I am really glad I asked....so then taking showers would be easier too....
Jennifer in MI
We hadn't heard of it either! But, when ds broke his arm while sledding right before our first cruise, his orthopedic surgeon recommended this cast. Ds was able to swim and shower - no problem! He said it itched a bit as it was drying, but it was worth it!
Jean in Newcastle
Are you positive that the blisters are from rubbing and aren't from an allergy to the material? Dd is allergic to some wraps and breaks out in a rash if we use them.
Alice
I’m not an orthopedist but I would imagine they will cast it if they think it needs something long term. Splints are usually just temporary until you see the ortho. The Gore-Tex casts are great. My 6 year old had one last year for a broken arm. Although a warning...he managed to slide it off after a bath one night. He had gotten soap under it and then it was itchy so he was trying to rub it and it slid off! He slid it back on and wouldn’t have told me but his older brother ratted him out, thankfully. :) We had to take him back and get him a new cast. I had never heard of it but the Ortho doc said it does happen more often with the Gore-Tex ones as they are kind of slippery. And it happens more if there was a fair amount of swelling when they put the cast on and then the swelling goes down. It also was a positive for us as I then took his cast off myself when the time came to do it. :) (Not that I recommend doing that but we were at the beach, he got sand in it and he kept complaining so I just did it.) Koerarmoca
Wish I had known about the vortex when we had one in a hip to toe cast last year! Totally ask!
kfeusse
I had always thought the same about splints (being temporary) until my son fractured his wrist a couple years ago....because we didn't get it x-rayed right away, he had already started to heal, so they just splinted it...and it was a MAJOR pain to keep him still (I think with a cast I wouldn't have been so concerned about it)....but it was winter and it was only a month....but I have learned my lesson about that...so I am really hoping that is their plan...without me having to ask about it.
