Wonder
We are not Mennonite, but we are Christians. As I'm looking into the CLE math, I'm wondering...does it matter that the word problems, etc. make more sense to a child living in a Mennonite type commuinity? I know the math processes are still applicable in different real life situations, but I'm just curious what others have thought about this. Thanks! PachiSusan
We have used Mennonite books and there have not been any problems except the acknowledgment that they dress WAAYYYY differently than we do.
LaraH
We've used CLE Math for two years and live in the city. The math books don't really have pictures of people. The story problems have been around nature, farming, animals, the zoo, weather, etc.

I was just commenting in general. :)
HeatherDanae
Not really. I use the CLE math and my kids have never really been confused about the word problems. They just look at it like it's a story about someone else's life that's way different than theirs.

mohsmom23
We haven't had any problems with it either.
aaplank
What I love about the CLE math story problems is that the same characters and theme is used throughout the whole light unit. It's very cohesive and pulls together real life math situations that can be applicable anywhere.
Wonder
Okay, thanks everyone! I think we're going to try a couple of LUs, but I'm guessing I will need the Teacher's Manual also?
LBoogie
The TM has helped me stay on track during the lesson.
LBoogie
(Make sure you get CLE's flash cards if you are still doing addition and subtraction fact drills. They have a systematic way of doing it.)
stripe
I disliked that one of the Mennonite readers had a vague scene that made clear the kid got spanked/paddled/? something in the barn. I didn't care for the weird coupling of a supposedly non violent religion with regular spanking. I am not Mennonite, nor am I deeply invested in non violence as the ultimate political solution, but it irritated me. Also the vague way it was phrased creeped me out. But that was not a math book. speedmom4
The 5th grade math word problems deal with people of other countries. Each light unit focuses on missionaries in different countries. I think it's interesting. We are not Mennonite either and we haven't had any issues. Elise in NC
mom@shiloh
I was just about to respond also re: the mission emphasis in the 5th grade math. I like it!
