MamaBearTeacher
Can anyone recommend a nice birthday present (toy) for a 7-year old boy? This is the first party DS is invited to and I wanted it to be something nice. Also how much do people generally spend on birthday presents for kids these days? Desert Rat
I usually aim for the $20-$25 range. There are some nice smaller size lego sets for that price. Hero Factory (Bionicles) are also fun. Cranium kids games are always cool, too.
Incognito
Fancy pop-up books are nice. A medium/small playmobil set could be good as well. It does depend on the kid a bit.
mytwomonkeys
i usually spend $15-$20. my son just had a birthday & received legos, a football, and board games. he absolutely loved everything.
Dahliarw
I spend anywhere from 5-25 (and usually on the lower end it's because I got a nice toy on clearance. I generally have a stash of toys I got for super cheap on clearance that would appeal to most kids). For a 7yo boy, it's hard to go wrong with Legos (and there is a nice price range in sets, so you can go with what suits your budget). Depending on the child's likes, board games or puzzles are fun too. And while it sounds boring and generic, my boys LOVE getting gift cards to places like Toys R Us or Target. They combine it with their own money to buy something they've been saving up for. No matter what you get, I'd recommend a gift receipt to go with just in case the child already has that item or gets duplicates.
CandaceC
My 7yr old would love a nerf gun and extra bullets! :)or maybe a small-ish Lego set of some type. I usually spend around $20.
jenn-
I can tell you that my 7 yo tomorrow birthday boy's list sounds like, Lego, Lego, and a Star Wars light saber.
Lisa in SC
Is he active? If so, pogo sticks are so much fun. Ds broke his a couple of months ago due to,excessive use, and we've yet to replace it. However, he loved it. He could pogo no hands, backwards...and the normal way of course. He was like the Energizer bunny.
MamaBearTeacher
These are great ideas! Should I get a gift receipt and put it in the card in case he has it already? Is that what is usually done these days?
lynn
Anything nerf or if you live someplace that will warmer soon a water gun or pool toys. As some have a said a gift card is always good.
magnificent_baby
We have given the Nerf flag football set (Target) many times and it was well received. I also second Lego sets. Costco had nice, huge sized kites this year that we have given as gifts. Walkie Talkies have also gone over really well. Beach towels, goggles, pool toys are another idea. I spend between $15-20. Caroline
We always do Legos and a book. And I make a fun pillowcase to use for wrapping. I put the gift receipt in the card.
Guest inoubliable
$20 of Legos or Nerf.
Splash
Legos are my son's favorite. Something he got that he loves is the Zing Air Curve bow. It is similar to nerf and arrows stick to windows, etc.
Stuart
Toysmith robot making kits are great gifts and under $15. My son loves these. He is a little older but they would be fine for a 7 year old with help. Great educational toy!! This is the one we made most recently. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002EWYEHW
Jen in PA
Hex bugs are nice, especially if you can get a good deal on one of the habitat sets. For Lego fans I really like the DK Lego reference books (Ideas Book, character encyclopedias, Brickmaster books, etc.).
fairy4tmama
Hex bugs are great even with out a habitat ( my kids build habitats out of legos and blocks). Also agift certificate to go bowling or mini golf would be appreciated by my kids and myself as we have a small house and so many toys. tshirtyogapantmama
I agree with others on a smallish lego set - you can't go wrong, something from the lego thing "city" is nice and can easily go with other legos down the road.
Forget-Me-Not
Nobody mentioned snap circuits yet? :D They've been a hit with my son and his cousins and buddies!
