Guest
My son woke up with his first cold sore. :( DH and I both get them, so I expected this. Is there a topical medication for cold sores in kids? I know I prefer Tanac, but I haven't had one in years, so I don't have any on hand, and I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to use it on kids. Thanks! jenn-
If this is his very first one, you might want to take him in to the doctor to get a prescription cream for it. I know first attacks can be worse than subsequent ones.
AnIslandGirl
I use Abreva for a topical cream, and take l-lysine as a vitamin supplement.
antsam
When I start to feel a cold sore coming on, I start putting carmex on it. It's always gone within a day or two. Never gets bad like it used to when I used Campho- phenique (sp?) when I was a kid Jodie

Vida Winter
I know this sounds crazy but for some reason the all-purpose veterinary medicine called "Vetericyn" works for cold sores. You can buy it at feed stores - get the gel formula. It is also effective on cuts/abrasions on humans and animals.
Guest submarines
DD once had what I absolutely sure was a cold sore, but it wasn't, as per her pedi. I forget now what it was, but it required a different type of medication. It is better to be seen. :-)
Lisbeth
Ask for oral Acyclovir and see if Abreva is safe for kids
mamajag
We're still using a product called Herpicin-L. I've tried Abreva and the newest one, but nothing gets rid of them faster. You can find it with the lip balm in the pharmacy section. It also helps with the burning sensation and itch.
